I am old now with some arthritis and limited nerve.I bought myself a nice steady eddie who is genuinely very quiet. You can get her to work but you have to be a bit disciplined.I am tired of people telling me she is a lazy cob who doesn't want to work.It is off putting and in a subtle way destroying of my confidence.I wouldn't dream off going up to someone and criticising their choice of horse.I try and rise above it.Thanks for listening.

Well done for realising what you want and need. And that she works well for you.

Tell them to s*d off and remember to smile and wave as they skitter sideways past you on whatever they have.

(Also pics of said lovely mare???)

Also old, with some arthritis and limited nerve!
Wish I'd known 30 years ago, what I know now. It took age and disability to teach me how much fun you can have with a pony you really trust.

This! There are too many people out there who own horses beyond their capabilities and have to psych themselves up to get on, or quite simply don’t get on at all. It’s supposed to be fun… Acknowledging (honestly) what you want out of your riding life is commendable.

You sound like you’ve found your perfect match and you enjoy her - and she sounds fabulous!

You said it all in the sentence “I wouldn’t dream of criticising their choice of horse” , of course you wouldn’t and neither would anyone other than a rude, bigoted ignoramus. Your mare sounds perfect and, as someone above said, worth her weight in gold. I’d like to see a photo too😊

I think my reply here would be the mumsnet go-to:

‘Did you mean to be so rude?’

Tends to check people without being overly aggressive, hopefully stopping them and making them engage their brains as to how their comments come across.

I’m another who could not be happier with my steady sensible cob. It means I can say yes (and often ‘Yeeehaaa!’) to trying new things as I know I’m in control, we’re not going to be doing acrobatics etc. I can relax and have fun, knowing I don’t need to take out premium life insurance!

Or the playground response of "I know you are but what am I?" Or slightly more grown up "takes one to know one"

Seriously how rude, a nice sensible low energy type is brilliant and doesn't correlate with lazy or workshy at all!

I used to get opinions a lot on livery about my choice to not ride and how I shouldn't give in to their physical issues to get the ridden as it's a waste... I told them my time, my money, my business, maybe you should mind your own? Held it in to just before leaving because I was worried about causing drama, but it felt so good I wish I'd have done it sooner! If you and your mare are happy and enjoying your time together, that's all that matters. Sometimes I think others only get joy in life from bringing down others who are content in theirs

I've also had those comments about my cob, telling me he's lazy and slow etc. I tend to just reply with a cheery "yes that's exactly why I bought him, isn't he lovely" or a sarcastic "well its lucky I didnt buy him for you then isn't it" If people tell me I should be doing this that or that to improve him is just tell them we're perfectly happy as we are thank you very much and trundle off on our merry way.

I've also got a very switched on youngster and get comments about him as well. I think people unfortunately can't help themselves but find something to criticise or have an opinion that they just have to share, you could have the most perfect horse and be the best rider and someone would still find something to pick on. I tell myself they're just envious of the fun I have with my well behaved nice ponies.
