Hi guys..

So mare is heavily in season and I really mean heavily. She's squirting so much it looks like she having a wee and she's doing it at mare, gelding..anything that moves generally.

My sis got on her tonight and she was definitely not lame, but every now and again looked kind of stiff on her back end, more her off hind than anything...her bum kind of came up like she wasn't bending her hock properly and moving her hind leg straighter underneath her, but this was just every now and then..she was lazier than normal but we put that down to the heat and she couldnt' be bothered....sis jumped off and wonderful very knowledgable YO looked at her trotted up and said she was definitely level behind with no lameness...in fact she looked better when in hand...
I do panic as she suffers from tying up and had an attack about a month ago, but it definitely wasn't that...she was happy to move forward and it didn't get worse with exercise as tying up would..it wasn't the same kind of stiffness that she gets when tying up as that is sudden and severe every time (she's had it 5 times now) and she also refuses to move when tied up..

Sis popped on again and gently walked her and she started to improve, tracked up and the 'bum hopping' disappeared....showed no signs of discomfort, ears pricked, happy to move up a gear..although was a bit lazy (but that's not unusual for her)...I did have a good feel up and down her back legs up to her rump and picked up both hooves which she was fine with...no heat, swelling, cuts, lumps etc..

her stomach has been grumbling quite a bit recently and she did have the runs for a couple of days prior to yesterday, but all poo's are now back to normal and throughout, she was perfectly happy, eating well and moving well in the field...

Anyone got any ideas?? She's nearly 10 by the way...

Do you think that it could be related to discomfort in her ovaries from being so heavily in season (in previous years she's never been too bad, but this year its minging!)...she's not been moody/agressive or changed in personality at all...

My mare has done something simular today when riding her. See my post in new lounge. She is'nt in season though as she is in foal. At least I hope she still is!!!!! Got her 2nd scan next week.

Hi Royal,
Sound like she is experiencing ovary pain (assuming that her saddle fits and that her back is ok?). Your description of how she behaves when ridden is exactly how my mare has been behaving in season recently. She 'humps' - not bucking, but lifting her back behind the saddle. Also, your first sentence could have been written about my mare!

Have you been having any other problems with her? My mare became so grumpy and unwilling and the change was so obvious (she was fine last year) that I ended up having her ovaries scanned and it turned out that one of them is twice the size it should be and looks abnormal. In a way I am please to have found this because it has explained a lot of behaviour issues I have been having with her. I am waiting for the results of a blood test at the moment to find out more about it.

It may be that your mare just needs a couple of days off each time she is in season - all us girlies know how uncomfortable things can get at the time of the month - now imagine someone bouncing on your back and kicking you in the sides! (No relfection on your riding - just using the term as an illustration :) )

If you have noticed a significant change recently then I would get the vet out to look at her ovaries - better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks for that jenrifer.....her mood/temperament hasn't changed at all...she's still sweet and lovely! :p
Its just the physical signs of her seasons have become very extreme this year .....she stinks and there just seems to be so much of it and as I said before, she is squirting at mares as well - but literally looks like she having a wee!! In the 6 years I've had her, the actual showing signs of her seasons have never been this forceful...but as I say, her temperament hasn't changed at all...all I would say is she seems a little less spooky when she's in season this time round rather than her usual increased spookiness.

I'm a little relieved that you think it sounds like ovary pain, as I'm so paranoid about the tying up and anything generally related to her bottom/back legs...I know its not nice for her, bless her socks, but the tying up really does get her bad and on a selfish note, its now excluded from her insurance...the last episode cost me over £500

Trouble is with giving her time off, I'm on strict instructions to ride her 6 or even 7 days a week and NEVER give her 2 days off together...all to help avoid the tying up.....:(

Hello - just a thought - my mare had a season very similar to what you are describing last month - very very messy! An instructor at one of my riding club classes suggested giving her Raspberry Leaf - so I gave it a try.
She's in season again now and you can hardly tell! Could be coincidence or could be the raspberry leaf - but it wasn't too expensive and may be worth a try - apparently it can ease pain in the ovaries.

If it is pain related when she is in season, could you lunge/long rein her rather than ride?

Good tip about the rasberry leaf - I might look into that for my mare

I tend not to ride my mare the first 2 days of her season. The ovaries are right under the cantle of the saddle. I think if you have period pains then someone sitting there must be uncomfortable.
My mare is on Naf Oestress and i barely notice her season really. I think it alleviates the symptoms a bit, i still give her the 2 days off though.

The last time I lunged her, she tied up :( so I won't be doing that again.....Though I could try long reining....good idea...

Will definitely look into the rasberry leaf...

Someone else also suggested Global Herbs Frisky Mare....

Thanks guys....
