I just want all your opinions on the following - and please be brutal if needs be! :)

As most of you are aware I'm away studying abroad at the minute but was browsing on donedeal recently and came across, what I would consider, a very neglected horse. I know about the current equine crisis in Ireland and that there are so many out there in need of help but the rescues are bursting at the seams.

So basically I enquired about said horse (bad move I know!). She is a 16 year old mare and has bred one foal. She is a trotter and is registered with the ''standardbred and trotting horse association of GB and Ireland''. (Hope that makes some sense to you..means nothing to me!) She is said to have a good nature and well trained both for riding and on the gig. She is further described as having plenty of life left in her.

Now bear in mind, shes very very neglected looking in the photo and has a rug on (we suspect to hide her being so underweight), she has the typical super skinny neck look going on. No idea of height but I figure from the photo she is about 15 hands?

Now I'm going home on Thursday until Tuesday and might possibly go look at her. What sort of price range would you suspect they are looking for and what would you make an offer of? I would love to just make a difference to one horse in need of a new life and new home. I have somewhere to keep her and she would share a field with sheep (or donkeys if I go with field number 2). I could have someone check up on her and feed her...but and the major but...I wont be at home full time until the summer. So until then she will just be left in the field munching away to hopefully gain weight (hard feed will be given).

Do you think this is reasonable or should I just call it quits and move on?

No harm in going and having a look, offer small money that you can afford, long as if you buy her give her a good dose of wormer and sure a few months munching grass will do her no harm.
Good luck what ever you decide

Provided someone will check herat least once a day while you're away then do it. But please don't buy her then just leave her in a field with no one keeping a close eye on her.

Without being rude she is worth meat money at 16. Probably been hammered on roads for years with little mouth left. If you can give her the chance for a better end, good on you. If she's survived on very little this long she must be a tough gal, & with some TLC may well spring back & go on to have plenty of years left. Please go see her if you can before you make your choice. I did take on a 19 year old horse whho I thought would end up at the meat man. I'd had her on loan for 2 years then her owner got made redundant, I was worried she'd need every penny including meat money. I paid £200 for her, that was a quite few years ago (she lived to be 29 & we had a wonderful time together) but can't believe prices would have gone up that much as they pay by live weight & if she is a skinny girl that wont be much.

i think go for a wee look and see how it gos! and seeing as theres sheep in the field too presumably said farmer or sheep herder :P will be around regularly aswel as the person you have feeding her! :)

without knowing the advert I wouldn't want to comment on price, I had a trawl through done deal and couldn't see anything advertised under trotters of that age or with a rug on. But if you like her go and see, it is always dependant on what you think she is worth, not anyone else :)
