Are they heel lifts but with grooves cut into them so the extra metal doesnt add to much extra weight?
We did shoeing in a module last year and i have seen some very elaborate shoes, all done by the therapy centre farrier to correct one problem or another!
 
These shoes have been designed for a horse with the early stages of Arthritis. The horse is in light work and this is mainly roadwork hacking. She has always been heavy on her shoes so has a slightly thicker shoe to counteract this. The heels are raised to offer some relief to her joints and the ridges are to help her grip on the road as road nails are a bit jarring for her. Will be interesting to see how she gets on with them. The raised heels (had a previous set on for 4 weeks) have already helped and she is striding out better with less warm up.
Note: This horse is not lame but this remedial shoeing is to try and prolong her working life. I thought it was fascinating and the farrier was quite pleased with himself
