hey; i really want to get this mare and her wee foal off this man who lets us borrow his trailer when ever we like but i don't no what way to ask my dad if we can get her. Shes a four-year-old 16.2hh mare and shes going to be broken in soon. My sister said she would help me and talk to my dad but neither of us know what to say to him:/ what could i say to him that could persuade him? She's £1000, but i have been trying my to be well-behaved and doing little jobs like putting dishes into the dishwasher and emptying it after its washed, tidying away everything after dinner/tea/breakfast/lunch ect.. , putting clothes on the line, taking them back in again, and much much more. What things could i say to him... any ideas?

thanks :) xo

If you want the horse/s that badly, you'll get a job to buy and support them yourself. However, I still think this would be a bad idea as you seem young and a foal and an unbroken/green horse are disasters waiting to happen for a first time horse owner without constant supervision. Wait until you can afford it yourself and you are experienced enough to know what a massive responsibility a foal and a young, inexperienced horse are.

forgot to add but i already have a green horse and when i got him he used to rush fences and his trotting and cantering and overall flatwork was terrible and very unbalanced but i worked on him over a good few months without going to lessons or instructors coming to my house or anybody helping me and now he is extremely balanced, jumping 1m-1.10m courses and he is very obediant. Also my neighbour got shetland mare and foal and nobody could catch them or go near them but i have been working with them and i can now groom them and touch all over their bodies.

I have been at horse riding for round 5,6 or 7yrs now (cant mind) and im 13, so i cant get any jobs so please just answer the question :)

You need to think really, really hard about this as they would be a huge responsibility. Do you have somewhere suitable for them both to live, do you have the time and support to look after them as well as the money that they will need spent on them over the coming years? You say that you have managed so far without an instructor but I am very, very old and still need help from my instructor! As to what to say to your dad, I can only suggest that you show him how hard you have thought about everything, perhaps write a plan showing how you would look after them and still do all your schoolwork (boring but dads tend to like this sort of thing!). I do think though that lovely as I'm sure they are, they would be too much for a youngster to cope with without lots and lots of experienced help.

thank-you for the advice:) i am trying my best to find the right instructor, and I've joined a riding club as well. The mare has the sweetest of nature and i hope to be getting her :) thanks

Well first things first, are you really sure you could cope with an unbroken mare and a foal? Have you ever worked with foals? Do you know how to deal with them before and after weaning? Do you know how to wean a foal?

As for the mare have you ever broken in a horse on your own before? Would you have any help as breaking a horse in by yourself is nearly impossible and not to be attempted unless very VERY experienced. What would you do if she was really difficult and bucked you off or bolted repeatedly? Have you got somewhere to keep her? Do you have any help at all?

I imagine these are just sone of the questions you will have to answer for your father. You should also do a costing per month to show your father and a weekend job even just a paper round to show him you can contribute something to the upkeep would help.

If you want any advice which I am sure you prob don't, I would advise you let this mare go to a more experienced\older home and you find yourself something a little older and already broken in.

You say that you can't get a job as you're only 13 - this isn't true. Provided you have a work permit issued via your local education authority you can have a paper round, or similar. I think it depends on local byelaws, but people between the ages of 13-15 inclusive can work up to 2 hours each day during term time, and 3 hours each day during school holidays.

If you were to get a job and save your pennies it would show your dad that you can be responsible and committed to things. Please remember that a 4yo 16.2 is a lot of horse to take care of, let alone if it's got a foal on foot.

You say you've been riding 5,6 or 7 years - this really isn't a lot, I've been riding for 17 years and owned horses for 8 years and I'm still learning!!

I thought you'd not long ago just bought a pony?? surely this would be the point your father would make??
imo only riding for 7 ish years isnt really enough experience to cope with a mare and a foal. Enjoy your pony whilst you still can lol they're so much fun. Theres no need to rush anything and when your ready with enough experience to bring on a green mare with a foal theres plenty about at a decent price.

hi , yeah i have been working with lots of unbroken horses, ponies and their foals and they were not at all good with people :/ but after spending about an hour a day with each of them individually over a few weeks, i finally got their trust :)

and no if i do get the mare i'm not going to be breaking her in, lol. the man whos selling her breaks horses in and he really wants to sell her to me. he even came over to my house to give me pictures of her. She is a beautiful, calm, friendly mare. I have visited her a lot and have fallen in love with her.
Also, my dad is VERY good with horses, he has always been with horses throughout his life and he loves them, but not as much as i do :p ;) lol , there is a riding instructor who lives actually not even a minute down the road from my house and i will most likely be going to her for lessons. She is an extremely good instructress, she trained her son (and his horse) and they qualified for pc in england, and we live in ireland, so she IS very very good.

I live 30mins away from a riding club, 30mins away from a pony club (pc) and 30mins away from an equestrian centre. my friend has a outdoor school and she is very experienced and she holds lessons once a week. One of my auntie's on my mums side is very experienced with horses and my uncle martin on my dad's side sold me his little pony, who was my first pony, who i still have :D (love him to bits asweel:D)

i will have loads of time this summer as i am not going on holidays (maybe just some where in ireland, not sure, but most likely not abroad) i won't be going to any summer camps (youth clubs ect..) so i will have plenty of time.

And finally yes, i do have lots of room for her as i live in the countryside and we own a couple of big fields, one of them 3 acres. And we have stables.

Just to ask... is a stable of 19/20ft x 10/11ft big enough for the mare and foal ? (by the way i only said 19/20ft and 10/11ft because when i measured them it was in between them i think slightly more closer to 19ft than 20ft and 11ft than 10ft :)) thanks anyways

because he lets us and we can't find any good second-hand trailers and there is no point at this stage since i can borrow one for free.
