ok, this might be a long un, so a bit of background for you all-
Red is 18, and an ex-riding school horse (15hh) his old owner bought him from the riding school, and had him for 2 years before she decided she wanted to get a flat with her BF.
We bought Red in August, when he was overweight, and unfit. He lost any extra weight quite quickly when he was bought into proper work, and he has been hunted all winter, and OH has been learning on him, he's been brilliant.
Red hates going in the school, which i think is understandable. as he'd been at the RS for about 5 years. Thing is, he's actually really well schooled and he goes really nicely when you have got past his stubborness. I had a jumping lesson a couple of weeks ago with Tracy Garside, and we both really enjoyed it. When we were warming up for the jumping lesson, in the school, Red put in a mahoosive buck. I stayed put, and Red went on to be quite good, apart from having a lack of brakes. I thought nothing more of the buck, putting it down to exuberence.
So, on to yesterday. I hacked Red out with my friend, and we had a long, quite fast canter.
When we got back, as we'd only been out for half an hour, we decided that we'd go in the school. All was going well, but Red was getting stronger, and leaning on my hands. I sorted that out and got him going forwards when WHOOSH, Red bucked. I sat on, but was quite loose in the saddle, and he bucked again. This had me off, and i hit the floor head-first.
He galloped off and the YM got hold of him. I took my hat off and got up, and noticed my hat had cracked
. I got my spare one and got back on him- he was brill for the next 20 mins in the school.
His saddle was checked 3 weeks ago, when the saddle fitter was on the yard, so its not that, and i think its just stubborness,or attitude, as he hasn't done it when i've schooled him in the field, or when we've being hunting, which he loves.
How do i stop him doing it? What can i do?
I'm annoyed with myself for not sticking on, and im annoyed with Red for pulling such a dirty trick.
Also, how would i stop him leaning SO much? Its only intermittedly that he does lean, but he's so bloody strong!
He's brill with the OH too- really looks after him and turns into a donkey.
Today, i've got a headache, my neck hurts, and i need to go and buy another skull cap- as if im not skint enough as it is!
