ok, this might be a long un, so a bit of background for you all-

Red is 18, and an ex-riding school horse (15hh) his old owner bought him from the riding school, and had him for 2 years before she decided she wanted to get a flat with her BF.

We bought Red in August, when he was overweight, and unfit. He lost any extra weight quite quickly when he was bought into proper work, and he has been hunted all winter, and OH has been learning on him, he's been brilliant.

Red hates going in the school, which i think is understandable. as he'd been at the RS for about 5 years. Thing is, he's actually really well schooled and he goes really nicely when you have got past his stubborness. I had a jumping lesson a couple of weeks ago with Tracy Garside, and we both really enjoyed it. When we were warming up for the jumping lesson, in the school, Red put in a mahoosive buck. I stayed put, and Red went on to be quite good, apart from having a lack of brakes. I thought nothing more of the buck, putting it down to exuberence.

So, on to yesterday. I hacked Red out with my friend, and we had a long, quite fast canter.

When we got back, as we'd only been out for half an hour, we decided that we'd go in the school. All was going well, but Red was getting stronger, and leaning on my hands. I sorted that out and got him going forwards when WHOOSH, Red bucked. I sat on, but was quite loose in the saddle, and he bucked again. This had me off, and i hit the floor head-first.

He galloped off and the YM got hold of him. I took my hat off and got up, and noticed my hat had cracked

. I got my spare one and got back on him- he was brill for the next 20 mins in the school.

His saddle was checked 3 weeks ago, when the saddle fitter was on the yard, so its not that, and i think its just stubborness,or attitude, as he hasn't done it when i've schooled him in the field, or when we've being hunting, which he loves.

How do i stop him doing it? What can i do?
I'm annoyed with myself for not sticking on, and im annoyed with Red for pulling such a dirty trick.
Also, how would i stop him leaning SO much? Its only intermittedly that he does lean, but he's so bloody strong!

He's brill with the OH too- really looks after him and turns into a donkey.

Today, i've got a headache, my neck hurts, and i need to go and buy another skull cap- as if im not skint enough as it is!

Bear's bucked on the last few hacks! And they aren't little ones! The other day he bucked I lost my stirrups and reins but managed to stay on while he was going 100mph down the lane. Maybe its something in the air! Bear's have sugerbeet shreads at the min so I dont know if they are hyping him up.
I quite enjoy it though!

I used to ride an ex riding school pony called Dutchess, and she did exactily what Red did. I took her for a 20min hack, she was very good. Got into the outdoor to give her abit of schooling and she got stronger and stronger, faster and faster, napped, galloped to the gate and bucked me off (one of my more pathetic falls lol!) It was isif she was saying "You've already hacked me, thats me done for today thank you!" She was in the riding school for a good few years too!

I'm not enjoying the headache, neckache and backache that i've got today.
Although i enjoy riding 'naughty' horses, bucking with the intent to get someone off is not fun/enjoyable!
He did it the jumping lesson tho, even when he hadn't been hacked out.

The jumping lesson could just have been excitment, as this is the only time my horse bucks. Well i dont really know if they class as bucks, more kind of bunny hops of joy on landing. As for the getting strong, she tends to lean and pull really badly when i school her. She was driven before she came to us but we have been reschooling her for the last 6years. sometimes lots of transitions down to walk/halt work and sometimes this just makes her worse. Other times when she gets really strong i let her run and get faster and do nothing. after about 2 or 3 laps of the school at full tilt, she twigs that i'm not fighting back and then settles down and works really nicely. try it it might work??

I had an ex RS horse. A chunky cob called Ben. He got kicked out the riding school for bucking but boy could he jump well! I had him and all the time we jumped and hacked no problem. A hint of 'schooling' and ping! Bum up in the air and they were real big handstand bucks!! He was just p%@sed of with being in a schooling situation. He's now on loan to a friend as a 'happy hacker' and hasn't bucked for nearly two years!
