Morning Advisors!

Any clues why my normally healthy and happy horse has a thick yellowy slimey snot out of her Right nostril yesterday morning (nothing by evening)And coughed a reall good (One) cough on the way to the field this morning.???

Should I panic and call the vet?
Should I get a bottle of NAF Koff, and see how she is over a couple of days (soaking hay in the mean time)?
Should I leave it be, and monitor for a few days.

no abnormal temperature recorded last night.
Hay not normally soaked, but high quality.
I am concerned that she got a bit sweaty last week unattended in a field, perhaps she might have a chill???
 
Ours have had a bit of snot & cough. Dosed up with cough mixture, garlic & manuka honey. First ones now over it, working it's way gradually through rest. Something must have hacked past field & been infectious as ours haven't been out bar one who has escaped it touch wood, & has had no contact with those it started in.

If you have any doubt, get the vet, snots can be symptoms of several things.

I had the vet out recently as my horse was displaying similar symptoms. He didn't have a cough at first but had thick yellow snot every morning. My vet checked him over and had a good old sniff up his nose and said it didn't smell. I hadn't noticed it only coming out of one side though. My vet said if he developed a cough to give them a call (which he did and I did) and they sent me some antibiotics. However, he's now out for longer each day and it's pretty much gone away.

Does it smell? If it smells then it is likely to be an infection.

Is your horse in a stable? If so can you allow more turnout? If your horse has hay, do you soak it? Also can you feed hay from the floor rather than a net?

Soaking hay and feeding from the floor helps reduce the dust and allows for better mucus drainage, which certainly helped my boy.

I'd always say that the vet would be the best person to speak to about any issue with your horse.
 
In overnight - field in day.
Hay not soaked at the moment - fed from floor.
No snot this morning. - Just the one cough.
Didnt notice it smelling - but didnt really whiff it

Going on a little slow hack tonight - Will assess then.

If She were me - it would be a few lemsips and bottle of Benylin! (shame the vets will cost 10x that!) :rolleyes:
