'bit' of trouble!

hey. i have a stallion who is just about to start BSJA - who is VERY strong! not nuaghty, just loves is jumping little too much. he is in a myler long shank combination bit, and i'm a strong rider, and although i can hold him, (most the time) its not suited to him. i dont want to use a hackamore as ill lose what steering he's got, and anything with a kirb chain makes hi throw his head around - however, i do think the nose and poll pressure seems to have good effect!!! what can you suggest i try???

If he doesn't like curbs that rules out Pelhams and doubles

You are in to American, Running, Continental, Wonder, Pessoa and various other gags. Or you could go down a different cobination bit route and try either a waterford or nathe. Alternatively there are the little jumper bits and Tom Thumbs.

If you horse does go in a myler, it will accept curb pressure higher up, so it may be worth trying any of the shanked gags (or jumper / tom thumb) with a curb as the pressure will be much higher up.

To add nose pressure you can use a kineton noseband with any bit. Also you can buy a Horse & More Nasen Schutz which is a rope rein you can attach to any bit (version with John W. on front of H&H about 4 weeks ago with a pelham)

I am waiting to try a Kineton, and Im hoping this will help. I know a lot of ppl out hunting have been using them recently with good results

I believe that bits are a very difficult thing to sort out. The best thing is to contact an expert who will give you sound & correct advice. If you bring up this website there is a telephone number for you to phone. She is very good & has sorted out countless problems for so many people.

Do you think? I think its kinder than a Mikmar - the rope part is the same idea, plus you dont have to have poll pressure (which you get wiht the Myler combis) - you can drop the rein and not use it, but have it as a back up - thing is I am a great german hackamore fan, I do like riding horses off the nose so I rather like the look of it!
