I've been looking online at different horsey retailers and I came across this bit. I've never seen one before and I can't imagine I would ever need to use one (hopefully!) It doesn't give a description on what it does and the effect on the horse, but my guess would be that the mouth piece stops leaning and therefore helps to prevent taking off/ bolting and obviously the cheek pieces on the bit help aid turning and the whole thing has a gag effect.

Am I on the right lines? & has anyone ever used one? I'm interesting to see how it helped the rider with control and how the horse accepted the bit.

EDIT - Also can some explain this bit to me please http://www.equiport.co.uk/products/detail/eb55_combination_hackamore_with_copper_windsucker/334/

Thank you :D

I think you are pretty much spot on with the first one. I think it looks absolutely brutal though, glad I've never actually seen one in use. I'm not so sure it would help with 'acceptance of the bit' with a chain mouth, more like a really really extreme version of a waterford to prevent the horse getting hold of the bit. I imagine (hope like crazy) that it would be used with two reins).

Second one also looks pretty severe. German hackamore nose, on the plus side we have no nutcracker action. I've used a myler combination on my horse before to take some pressure away from her mouth when she was worried about her tongue (ex riding school pony). The hackamore part would be quite strong and there is no cushioning on a German hackamore like there is on an English one.
The mouthpiece is really interesting. I suppose the copper would increase salivation and the holes - maybe they would too? I'd be interested to hear other people's take on how this might work. I don't think I'll be buying one any time soon though.
How interesting.
