My mare had her new bit in today for the first time, and a couple of times it kind of 'clanked' on her teeth like she was almost chewing it. Is that a sign that it is too low? I was careful not to fit it too high so she was 'smiling' constantly

But now Im paranoid it is too low...

Have you lookied or felt inside her mouth to check where the bit is laying? that will tell you definitely if it is touching any of her teeth back or front.

Some horses have deeper pallet than others, when checking in their mouths you really need to do this when you are one her, taking a contact as you would when your riding her, get someone on else (who knows what they are looking for) to take a look) your horse may just be feeling her way round it which may cause the bit to move around more clang on the teeth, adjusting the side peices can help if the bit is either too high/long but sometimes the only thing that helps is finding a bit that is more suited to your horses mouth/lips (thickness and shape etc) I'd give your horse a bit more chance to get used to it, you could always get your dentist to double check if he's due for a visit soon.

The dentist only came a few weeks ago so her teeth are fine. She has gone from a kimblewick - so ported straight bar, to a french link hanging cheek snaffle...so maybe she is just playing with it because its not a solid straight bar?? Il see if she keeps doing it...

That would be my guess; she is just playing with it, however you do want to check that she has a couple of wrinkles at the side of her mouth when she is bitted.
