Hi there

Just having my new horse purchase vetted but subject to him passing :) he's mine. He comes with no tack at all and I am deliberating about what bit to start out with. He is a little Spanish bred horse but not a PRE. He has a rather fleshy mouth and a low pallet. He has had some wolf teeth knocked out at gum level (apparently with a hammer in spain!) owners vet apparently recommended to leave them as they are but to bit with something which 'took the aid out of his mouth'? which i don't know what meant unless a bit-less set up which I am not keen on. Current owner tried a Pelham which he did not like. and is now riding in a ported Nathe bit which he does not really love either and gives a very dead feel. He is not however especially tricky in his mouth - i mean he is not strong or pulling faces or tossing his head.
I am thinking of trying a warm metal lozenge loose ring bit but would welcome any further suggestions...?

My mare has a really fleshy mouth and huge tongue, we were having issues and tried so many. We went right back to basics and tried a bradoon snaffle so the mouth piece is really thin. The change is unreal

Well if that's her bucking in your profile pic!!! Impressive seat you have I'd have been somewhere round her knees at that stage I think! Anyway I also thought about a bradoon Snaffle - I use one on my Lipizzaner and he loves it - I think it might be a little harsh for this horse as he is more of a worrier when he makes an error certainly worth a try though

My cob has fleshy lips and a large tongue, she is currently in a Neue Schule Trans-Angled lozenge. She prefers a thinner mouth piece. I have been thinking of trying the Stubben Gold Wings snaffle so that the loose ring can't pinch at all.

peewee if your not initially bothered by it being comp legal. I like pinchless FL loose ring as well for those types.I only seem to have breeds/types that have no room in their gobs and none of them like lozenge bits.

That's interesting - perhaps because they are often on thick mouthpieces? - I actually have one which I spent ages looking for which has a narrow mouth piece but is still a lozenge not FL, but in fact the mare I got it for prefers a wider mouth piece. Might try to find a pinchless FL design as my plan B if he like yours dislikes the Lozenge

maybe although on my lusitano I tried various lozenge bits on thinner mouthpieces and he just didn't like them. the korsteel pinchless FLs with the swivel plates are nice as they sit where they need to. He liked a copper 1/4 moon ported loose ring as well. I also have Exmoors who have even less room in their mouths-one never accepted any sort of jointed bit, went ok in a tiny thin mullen pelham but goes beautifully in the peewee. Young Exmoor currently being backed prefers a thin mullen as well but its early days. Have a new young kuso coming so will see what he likes :)

I know this is a bit off topic but given as horses just have preferences for different bits it always seemed odd that only some bits are 'legal' After all almost any bit can be used well or poorly. I had a pony for yrs that only went happily in curb bits - she was happy soft round etc in a pelham or a double but was always unhappy in a snaffle. So no dressage for me though i longed to compete her as she was lovley. Went hc a couple of times and always did well

My cob has a fairly fleshy mouth and tongue and is quite fussy in his mouth - doesn't like a strong contact or anything with too much tongue pressure.

Tried several varieties of lozenge bits, and he was ok but not happy in any of them. Tried a loose ring myler and he went the best in that...until I tried a copper eggbutt which he also went well in - and never got any rubs on his pink lip even if he'd been v strong. Eventually got hold of a full cheek myler and he loves it - well...quite likes it. Think he doesn't actually like the movement from loose rings. The full cheek myler is also BD legal :)

Myler also does a low port version which I got in ported eggbutt (slotted version) which he also likes - but not BD legal, so I save for if I need a little extra brakes fast hacking etc.

We both like the myler - doesn't take up much room in the mouth, if you have to take a pull, it doesn't collapse on itself and pinch the tongue the way other linked snaffles do; benefits of straight bar, but better steering and BD legal :)

Neue Schule trans angled lozenge or verbindent works great with my boy too. I also have a Spenger KK ultra which I bought second hand, he seems to like that too. Lots of trial and error I'm afraid!

I tried a whole host of different bits back when I had my lad.
Surprisingly he really liked happy mouths and though usually strong would go perfectly in a straight bar, full cheek happy mouth. He hated vulcanite bits (not surprisingly, so thick and bulky!) and didn't like a thin, solid mouth piece either.
I didn't try anything with a port as I thought it would interfere with his low palate but a slightly rounder mouthpiece (such as the neue schule bits) seemed to help.

I think more than anything my lad liked something light in his mouth, a hollow bardoon did more for him than a solid snaffle, but whether that was down to his fleshy mouth or personal preference, I couldn't say.

Echo the people who have said Myler. My fell has a fleshy mouth and after a bit of trial and error we worked out he hated anything with a joint in it, including all lozenges etc. We use a mullen mouth myler mouthpiece; both the hanging snaffle and the pelham version.

Thanks that's all interesting - if he is the horse in your banner and profile he looks very lovely

The peewee. I rehabilitated a remedial cob with a fleshy mouth who had been twitched by the tongue using a pee wee bit.

Great for anything with a fussy, dead or naughty mouth.

Worth it's weight in gold! X

Thank you! Yes, that was him. He could be quite strong at times but think finding the right mouthpiece did more for him strength wise than finding a different acting bit. I also put bit rings on any bit it was viable to do so with, think he was more prone to pinching and rubbing with his thick gums.
