Hi guys,

Need some advice....

I've recently started doing a bit of jumping with my boy.
We're doing really well but I've now hit a problem....I've no brakes!

I'm not a confident jumper and I'm really trying my best to work on this but the "no brakes" issue is starting to set me back.

I ride Fudge in a loose ring waterford snaffle at the moment.
His way of going could be described as very much on the forehand with a tendency to lean heavily on the bit (particularly on the left rein).

I do have regular lessons etc to work on this but thought a change of bit may help me in the short term.

Thanks in advance!

When I went to see my new horse, the owner had her in a tom thumb gag to jump her and a loose ring waterford to school. I now ride her in a loose ring french link snaffle. Could you lend a bit from somewhere to try with her?
I have told you this as it is the same bit as you are using.
You have to work out if your horse works with poll pressure, ports, lip or tongue pressure, loose ring, (which are usually for horses that lean) etc and work with this.
You say you are using a loose ring waterford and he is still leaning?? As this is a loose ring bit and is hard to get hold of, he shouldnt be able to lean on it. Is this bit a little bit longer than you need as waterfords should be wider than the mouth to work well. That is to say that if you would use a 5" snaffle, then you should use a 5.5" waterford.
Are you kicking him up from behind and giving a little shake of the rein to the side that he is leaning on. Has your instructor given you exercises to help with this?
Has his teeth been checked?
Sorry for all the questions but its trial and error when it comes to bits. I have a couple of friends that swear by the KK ultras, but I have yet to try one.
I hope this has been a little bit of help for you.
