I've had my youngster for six months now and he's coming along just grand but i've started to realise that i don't think the bit i've had in him is quite suitable anymore. I've got a loose ring french link but i've got a feeling he's not liking the movement that this bit gives. Having never really used hanging cheek or fulmer bits i just wondered if anyone could suggest a bit for him.
He doesn't lean, doesn't bolt etc. Just sometimes will have a nose poke if confused or doesn't like something so i just need a mild bit for him. He does prefer lozenge/link type bits to jointed ones.
Trouble is i need to be able to have a bit to hunt or do cross country in and he does get a little stronger when out so maybe two bit suggestions if poss

I'd just swap to a lozenge loose ring for now, the french lip can flop about and pinch especially if its a fit mouthpeice with relatively big rings joining the link.

For faster work, if your horse gets more excitable I would go down this list (mild to severe)
Baucher Lozenge
Beval lozenge
Universal lozenge (if head up)
3 ring lozenge gag (if head up)
Tom thumb lozenge (if head down)
Running gag lozenge (if head down)
Kimblewick lozenge (if head up)
4 ring lozenge gag (if head up)
Pelham with lozenge (if head up)
American gag with lozenge (if head up)

I would suggest a lozenge bit with fixed rings such as an eggbut. I would alter the noseband to a flash or grackle when extra control is required.

As a rule of thumb, gags are for horses which lean down, the gag action deters this behaviour.
Curb bits for horses with heads in the air as this encourages head lowering.

I've managed to find an eggbutt lozenge bit on derby house so was thinking of trying that to see how he gets on. Will have a think on what bit to use for faster/hunting work.
Thanks muchly
