Bit Suggestions

I have just started to jump Shearer in a full cheek snaffle because I find I struggle with steering and it also stops him randomly ducking out to the side which he can do when he's feeling jolly! But he HATES the full cheek, its the right size for him and fitted correctly but he is so unhappy in it

But I find my steering MUCH improved in it

So what to do?

Anyone got any suggestions of bits that will really help with steering other than a full cheek snaffle? I don't particulary want him in anything strong. He is ridden flatwork in a half cheek snaffle.

Why does he hate it? what does he do to show this?

ears back the second he sees his jumping bridle with new bit on
( he LOVES jumping usually) refuses to open his mouth for the bit, goes along with his head almost sideways on, on the floor, hard to describe but I hope you get what I mean! Refuses to give me anything through his mouth, just goes totally solid, won't soften and bend etc.

I know its not his teeth because he had them done two weeks ago and he has been going fine in his flatwork bit.

Ok, what mouthpiece has it got? A full cheek shouldnt make that much difference unless it is putting pressure on the side of his mouth and causing pain...

The mouth piece is jointed.

Single jointed? I would try something with a lozenge or a french link, as it will pinch less.

What about putting bit guards onto his normal snaffle bit?

Wouldn't they do the same thing as a full cheek bit?

hermangerman - Thats a good point , I hadn't thought about doing that, I'm not sure if it would have the same affect though?

It's worth a try, as they are soft rubber they may be a bit more forgiving at the sides of the mouth.

The only thing is they are not allowed in dressage!

Not a problem as I would only jummp with them, will get a pair and give it a go,they are only about £1 in the tack shop

I would suggest a french link or lozenge dee ring snaffle. Similar action to a full cheek, but without the full cheeks.

You can also get those half-spoon and full-spoon bits which are similar to the full cheek but have the curved side-pieces which he may find more acceptable.

Agree that it seems odd though that he objects so strongly to full cheek bit. Is the mouth piece different to your schooling bit at all?

Very odd, especially if you are using the same mouthpiece. If it's a different mouthpiece I'd be inclined to think it was that rather than the full cheek. Do you usually use a loose ring? If so try a fulmer (full cheek with loose rings outside). Failing that....a D ring. My other thought would be he maybe has a sharp edge on a tooth and the full cheek is putting pressure on in that area?? I know you said he's had his teeth done but once when my Horses were done a tiny sharp point was left on one of his teeth. Did the change of bit happen just after his teeth were done?
