after being retired for 4 years while i was at uni i moved my horse to my new house, renting a trailer. he was an absolute sod to laod, and has not been loading since (almost a year) which isnt really a problem as ive not been planning to go anywhere.

anyway, ive been borrowing another liveries trailer to practise loading when im on my own as any 'help' has my horse rearing, and ive been loading him ok, to the extent i can now point him up the ramp and he'll go up and load himself.

so thats all great, but the thing im a bit upset about is the trailer owner pretty much bullying me when i asked him to open the rear ramp so i can back the horse out (i know theres less chance of being barged) and he wouldnt open it because he said i should come out the front and not be
a) soft,
b) unfair on my horse because hed ratehr come out forwards, and assorted other things.
it took me about 10 minutes of insisting before he's like, ok have it your way but its the ******* way of unloading. i felt really stressed about it because it seemed he was trying to bully me into doing it his way.

am i being oversensitive or does it seem reasonable to want to unload my horse as i choose?

i dont think that your being unresonable neither do i think he is. I suggest you deminstraight to him what your horse is like unloading from the front, possibly letting him try.

should your horse be a nightmare for you/him this could avert arguements in the future and then your horse could also suprise you and walk off fine, also averting future arguements

Personally, unless you are going to take your horse out and about in your own trailer and with him on his own then continue to take him off backwards. Although If in a trailer with another horse then I would prefer if you unloaded him out the front, as opening the back of the trailer with two horses in it can cause the other horse to panic and hence learn to run backwards out of a trailer. This is the only reason why I could possibly see that he is trying to badger you into bringing your horse out of the front.

Oh bit of a rock and hard place situation as it's your horse but his trailer and he is helping you out by loaning the trailer so you have to give him some thanks for that.

Now he's seen your boy come off backwards OK do you think he'll be better about it in future? He might just not have seen it done before and been worried about it?

the trailer is a bit small and not very well designed and the partition doesnt go across far enough for my liking to get my little fatty out, whcih causes him to rush

i thin khe was just being a control freak to be honest. and as for the trailer lending, ive done enough for him ie re-schooled 2 horses (and regularly exercise) so i dont think leading my horse up and down his trailer ramps is much to ask really. wont be borrowing it again though

I can understand where you are coming from. Although did loose all the skin on my hand with a severe rope burn many years ago from my horse pannicking and running out of the trailer backwards, I was lucky I didn't lose my hand as it was trapped by a completely freak accident on the breast bar. To teach our youngsters not to rush off the trailer we usually start with leading them through slowly with a treat in our hands to slow them up, this enables us to move them as we need to, to get them out without knocking their sides. Also if you load your horse onto the opposite side to the front ramp then you should be able to open the partition enough for it not to knock him as you bring him off.

Send him round to unload my horse from the front - once he's been squashed and trampled a few times he'll understand the point of coming out the back!

Im bringing my boy out backwards too, problem is as soon as hes in he legs it out backwards before we can get the breaching strap or ramp up. I tried reverse pshycology sp by trying to go back to front unloading and now he wont come off via the front ramp at all

. Ive resorted to rear unloading him as I was crushed in his haste to get out!
I think you should ignore him and carry on doing it your way. Some people just think they know better!
