Peter has been working hard. He is getting fit but I am so aware of his intermitant lameness. Nothing major, bit footy one day, sound the next. I am very careful with him. Had a lesson yesterday and I felt he was a bit 'short' on the near fore. As the lesson went on he was 100 per cent sound and worked really well. The thing is he is loosing weight. My instructor commented on how good he looked but I feel he is loosing weight too quickly. He has two feeds a day but at the moment I have had him on haylage and he does not finish his nets. Tomorrow I am going to introduce hay as i think the haylage is too rich for him. (it is this years and only 8 weks old). Maybe its me, everyone else says he looks great but I think there is somethin up. Pointless post really, just a worried "mum". xx

You as his owner know him better than anyone else, you will notice changes in him before others.

If you are at all worried that there is something up maybe you should get the vet out.

Rang them but to be honest unless i can put my finger on it neither can they. They can take bloods etc. but it is very early stages so they advise "vigilence". Believe me, i am not one to hold out on the vet. Just airing my worries really. maybe nothing. My experience tells me that the feed is wrong. Need to address that me thinks. Thanks for your input though. x

I don't know his background so can't comment on that, just wanted to say I feel for you and hope he's ok. Its so worrying when you have that niggling feeling somethings wrong but no one else can see it!!

He's lucky to have such a caring owner. Could it be that you are expecting problems because of his past, so far it has been a gamble that has paid off for you, maybe you are over worrying!! Hope so anyway, fingers crossed!!

Thank you for the compliments...I just love your horses so its sad to hear when one of them is not doing so well.....
Charly has got two abcesses at the moment in his front and back hoof, as well as seedy toe....my little pony has seedy toe too.....so when horses get ill it just deflats you a little....

I dont think the weather helps either.....maybe he is a little down because its meant to be summer and he is fed up with all the rain...

Honestly if I was closer to you I would down giving you a hand anytime ;0)
Keep us posted on how he gets on...I really would pester the vets again to come and take a look at him and do some more test....how his temperature....?

Hi. As a fellow "Biggy" owner i know where you are coming from on both the weight and stiffness issues. My boy seems stiff this time of year, and progresses as it gets colder and wetter. I know most horses feel it, but the big ones seem to notice it more.
As regard to weight Max is a nightmare!! I am already worrying about the winter, as the minute he feels the cold, he drops weight. I not clipping this year, i am putting him on hayledge instead of hay, and i am crossing my fingers he maintains some of the weight i managed to get him to gain during this year.
I have him on 2 huge feeds a day, but if you can wangle it, he would be better on 3. I am a huge fan of Top Spec Conditioning cubes, and also have Max on their balancer. I know you shouldn't need both, but again it's a biggy thing

Hope he improves soon, and i will say again, he is SO lucky to have found you

Good luck with your show jumping. And don't you dare think you will let him down

Thank you for your kind words. I have never had a "biggy" before and to be honest i am fearful. I am ever vigilent with regards to his everyday appearence. The three meals a day is possible and thanks for pointing out the obvious.. Thankies again for your kind words. So appreciated. xx

You obviously know him best, but be mindful that when you are anxious about something, you will start looking for the smallest signs that confirm your belief and discounting (or plain old not noticing) anything to the contrary.

It does seem that there is something a bit 'off' but do be careful it doesn't become an overriding obsession - I'm another worrier this end, so I know it can take quite a toll and he too is likely to sense that there is something wrong. Keep an eye on things, but do seek outside opinions every now and again to keep things in perspective.

You're evidently a dedicated owner, comitted to doing your best (and chances are, your best is probably never good enough in your eyes) so the chances of you missing something major that would easily be spotted by others is rather slim. We human shapes just love to complicate things.

Keep your chin up, and CHILL! You fretting will not help matters. Sending vibes to peter, and metaphorical bottles of gin to you.

Hun you are the best thing that has happened to this horse

He stood in a field doing nothing for a very long time, and now he has a job, he is bound to drop a bit of weight now he is using himself. You are not overdoing it with him, he just needs a bit more fuel in the tank, i'm guessing. I would imagine he had a grass belly when you found him, and that wil be falling off, and now he is getting fitter that too will show

It was only a few months ago that i posted some worrying pics of Max's condition, and had some equally worrying answers. But he is good now and is looking better than i have seen him.
Put some before and after pics on for us to see, i bet theres not a staggering difference...... And i get to see my fav hho boy again
