Bitch in Season

Hiya, my mums dog is 12 days into her heat cycle (well since she started bleeding), when should she be safe around dogs (where she cannot get pregnant, we dont want any puppies!)

I know this can differ between size of the dog and breeds, but is there any signs to look for or a rough timescale?

You need to keep her away from dogs for at least another 2 to 3 weeks to be safe. Some bitches can be fertile very late on when they appear to have totally finished their seasons.

A bitch's season will not vary according to her size or breed although individual bitch's can vary enormously - some only having one season per year and others having them as short as 4 months apart !.

The length of a season is roughly 21 days - from around the 10th day the blood colour of the discharge will clear and become a pale straw colour and less in amount - the swelling of the vulva changes too becoming softer and more wide spread - your bitch may stand with her tail held to one side if you rub the back of her spine and this is a good indication that she is ready to be mated- and is at the stage when she is most likely to conceive - so at her most 'dangerous' if you want to avoid any pups.

After several days she will start to go off heat and be less likely to stand for mating - but remember this is a very rough guide and you will need to be vigilent for the whole of the 21 days to be completely certain. Hope this helps

The 12 day is one of the main mating days!! So be very carefull. What we do is when they start to stain (bleed) Seperate for 3 weeks plus 3days to stop any unwanted mishaps plus the hormone scent should be gone by then too!!

Sorry to hijack - but spotted the expertise here -

I know my greyhound is 'gelded' but should I keep him seperate from my JRT bitch when she comes into season? i.e will he still recognise this - he was done late and my greyhound bitch is spayed so he hasn't come into contact with a female in season.

All I can say is that our GSD male was neutered late and he still mated a bitch some 6 months after the "op". Mind you the little hussy was encouraging him! Obviously no puppies resulted. He had never mated a bitch before being done as he was never given the opportunity but was always very interested in the girls. I would just keep an eye on him and see how he reacts, maybe not leave them unsupervised until your sure he has forgotten what his bits are for!

Sometimes neutered dogs will still get excited by a female in heat. They may even mount and, eh, perform the act. He just can't impregnate her. But it's not recommended anyways, since injuries can happen even with the best supervised matings. And yes, freshly neutered dogs can still impregnate a female; it takes a little time for everything to settle down, so to speak.

Personally, I would highly recommend spaying. If you aren't going to breed her (which I hope you don't), there's no reason to keep her intact. It'll be safer and healthier for her all around.
