My normally overactive Alaskan Malamute bitch is quite subdued this morning. Was slow to get up off the ground and is favouring a back leg. She occasionally gets a stiff leg after she's been laying down (she is 6 yr old) but just seems to be a bit slower than normal and not steady on her hind.

She finished a heat 1-2 weeks ago (not mated) and today is bleeding. I haven't noticed her do this in her previous heats?

Anyone got any comments about her or am I an over reactive mother?

I can't help with the heat aspect as my mally girl is spayed but she does have funny morning bouts where she doesn't want to go for a walk and is lethargic. She's had 3 of these over the last 6 months and she went to the vets for tests and they found it is a thyroid issue which slows her down. Treatable though thankfully, but they also found her hips to be starting to cause problems too so she's on meddle for that also. My girl is 10 though

Just to add a note for all mally owners

- if she needs an anaesthetic for any reason, please be careful, as mals have a different metabolic rate than other dogs, so they absorb drugs very quickly, they take longer to leave the system, and can have unpredictable results - a slight overdose can be fatal!
Make sure your vet weighs her.
Rapinovet is a short acting anaesthetic recommended for malamutes, and enables the vet to keep the dog under for a short a time as absolutely necessary!

My girl is much improved! Limping is just stiffness from laying around all day (pouring rain at the moment). Bleeding stopped, her behaviour is back to normal but still watching closely.

Mine are not worked. I wanted to get into agility with my bitch (male is not agile enough!) but then I fell pregnant so that never happened.

We take my mally to agility - the first time we took her to a class the trainer rolled his eyes and said he wasn't expecting much. She now sits, gives her paw (each paw seperately), lies down, stays and fetches. She's really good at agility and loves jumping and going through the tunnels and often beats the smaller nimbler dogs! She'll never be as speedy as a collie but we've been so surprised by her progress - more importantly she adores it!

Thanks Misterjay and FinkleyAlex.

I think mally's really surprise a lot of people. I did the usual training with my girl up until 6 months old and I know she surprised the instructor. She was the only one to correctly do everything first, outdoing lab's, collies and a jrt cross lol. The instructor set up a small agility course and my girl was the only one who jumped through the hoop - again, first go.

Our big fella is nicknamed cyclone because he is a slow moving depression...! Our little girl is the firecracker though and more than makes up for the big boy!

Very proud mummy here lol.
