Right, no condemnation please, i'm going to do the right thing if necessary... already booked in for vet scan on Wed.
1 of my girls was in season (her first), finished 2 weeks ago. watched her like a hawk the whole time but unfortunately OH let her out once while i wasn't looking and she was gone for 10 mins (we live in the middle of nowhere so this isn't as bad as it sounds...) and she went AWOL once when i was distracted for a minute, so i guess there's a chance that she might be up the duff.

if scan is positive, i'll see if the vet can do a morning-after-pill for her, or spay i guess. i'd feel very guilty but there are enough unwanted pups in the world, and i don't have friends lined up for these pups, if there are any...
the only signs are that her nipples are a bit more defined than usual, hanging down a little and slightly fat around that area.
is this normal for a post-season bitch anyway?
or, is it a sign of the start of pregnancy?
worrying myself sick here.

thanks for any replies (as long as they're not insulting!)

Hey - no condemnation from me Kerillie - it happens!!

It is a possible sign yes - has she had any other changes in behaviour/appetite?

Popple's teats are much more prominent during, and for quite sometime after, being on heat. In fact, after her first being on heat, they never really went back to how they were before. So I wouldn't panic.

no other signs at all, very energetic etc.
thanks guys, the scan is going to cost £65 (+ vat) and i'm a bit broke at the moment so would rather avoid it, but i can't stand not knowing and i want to do the right thing while there's still time...

she came back alone each time, i can't help thinking that if she had found a Casanova, he'd have followed her home... no? argh, it's driving me crackers!

mmmm - it's certainly a toughie! I does sound as though she may have got away with it if she was out of sight for such a short time and there are no other changes. I can undestand you wanting to do the scan though, just to be sure! I'd probably have it done myself if I didn't want her to have the puppies. Good luck anyway!

Damned animals!!

Yes, if she was only gone 10 mins and you didn't catch her with another dog I would agree it's less likely.

I had to give Puppy the morning after jab once as we found another dog with her. We lived on a huge farm, off a very busy road and this dog had traipsed quite some distance up this terrible road to track her down, and once he knew where she was he bloody kept coming back! Not only that, but she chewed through the barn wall to get out with him (we'd had to put her in there as my OH at the time had an entire springer). The OH wanted to shoot this thing after finding it in our garden for the 3rd time!

Vets gave her the jab and very kindly did the subsequent scan for free. I would have thought if a dog had found your bitch then you would have known about it!!

I think 10 minutes is a very, very short time, and really not enough for 'it', but I totally understand your need for certainties.

Also, when did you catch her? I've always known that the most fertile days are 10-13 days after they finish bleeding, not when they're actually bleeding.

We had to give two morning-after jabs to Florimell recently - totally my fault, I was watering the hedge outside and was 100% convinced she was asleep on my bed under the duvet, so had left gate open. After about half an hour I went upstairs and she wasn't in bed - found her playing with the neighbours' horrible dog who's always hanging around here when mine are in season (has even been found inside our garden at times!).

We went to the vet's the next day as we really couldn't risk it (she's much smaller than the male dog - not to mention the fact that having to look after anything fathered by that ugly thing would be unbearable

). He said it wasn't that likely though, as both dogs should have been exhausted after doing it and they weren't.

Hi, agree with FrodoBeutlin. Also my little bitch used to get swollen teats post season sometimes going into a phantom pregnancy. Directly after a season ended if I pinched one of her lower teats a little milk would come out this happened without going into a full phantom pregnancy and stopped as she got older.

ah, she wasn't exhausted at all, just looked like normal.
thanks FB ans snoozles.
am i mad taking her for a scan then? is it a total waste of the vet's time and my money? could really do with saving the dosh, awful as it sounds.

She could just be a bit hormonal post season. Wouldn't agree that she would necessary be exhausted if she had done the deed, ime bitches are usually full of energy, very flirty and up for a second go after mating

. I have also had bitches mate and conceive whilst showing full colour, and also at 23 days after 1st sign of season, like everything with animals they haven't always read the text books. For your peace of mind it might be worth having her scanned, but instead of payng £65 to the vet, not sure if lincs is sheep country, but if it is trying and find if there is someone local who scans ewes. That is who I used to use, he charged me a £5

Ets. Frodo, the most fertile time is usually 10 - 13 days after they start bleeding, not after they have finished, would hate for you (or rather your bitch) to get caught out by working on wrong timings

Aaaaaah Murphy's Minder, you're totally right - yes it is 10 to 13 days after they *start* bleeding. Sorry, wasn't thinking when I was writing.

I don't know Kerilli, is it too late to do the jab without even doing the scan? That's what my vet did for Florimell.

After Loco`s first season she started showing signs of being in pup, more prominant teats lost most of the hair on her belly but she didnt get any bigger and i knew she had no way been mated, as has been said its more than likely hormonal, after that first season loco has never shown such signs

Hi, any lurking boy dogs near you? If she is maiden and has not already had "practise" she might not know what to do yet and go on the defensive when mounted.

I've taken mine to the vets once after an escape into the farmers field with a labrador (she's a tiny tiny jack!), and then just left it on other occasions with swollen teats when there was no evidence to cause me to worry. I have an entire male I keep separated from the girls in the danger period just in case. He has to have his bits and bobs off, he is sadly totally gay and was supposed to be my nice stud doglet so kept him entire to mature - he's totally gorgeous too!

My collie bitch had swollen teats and even produced milk after her first season, nothing came of it though so it was put down to being a phantom/very hormaonal as it was first time.
Also my friends great dane always swells after seasons.

My beagle is having a false pregnancy at the moment (not the 1st time) and she's not long had her season, her teats are vvv swollen and are dripping milk now and again. She just could be taking a while to fully 'come down' from her season or maybe is also having a false one?

I was also concerned she had been got at as she disappeared a while back on a walk but i realised after 2hrs she had eaten a munjack!!! her tum was massive!!! so was 90% sure she had been hunting. I got the vet to check her as i was sooo paranoid she'd been got at by some kind of random dog and she thinks she's def having a falsie.

Hi, we just became parents to a lovely little unwanted dog from the RSPCA and I was wondering if her long teats meant she is pregnant, so I clicked on here for information. I understand how some of you feel when your dog has been made pregnant and how you feel annoyed and angry. I think it's important to understand that even the dog who made her pregnant is a poor, dumb animal acting on instinct and hasn't intentionally done anything wrong. I understand how you feel like shooting him, but he isn't, 'bad' and it was a mistake first of all with your bitch getting out and then by him being allowed to stray around; but, at no time does this mean he deserves to get shot or looked upon as human with that understanding of what he's done and the implications. I wish you all well with your dogs and hope they don't get out. It can easily happen in a family situation.
I am not trying to sound judgemental, but I feel we should not refer to any dog as being 'ugly' as again, it can't help its looks and it is a creature like every other one and has its own beauty and deserves respect and care like all other creatures whether or not they were bought for a lot of money, or rescued from a centre, having been unwanted. Thanks for reading this...

Scans won't be reliable until 28 days onwards so too early to scan and too late for the morning after jab.
You could just book her to be spayed which would make sure and save the £78.

oops - missed that.
£78 for a bitch scan three years ago is even worse - £20 at a scanner & £30 odd at most vets around here.
