My horse has just moved to a new yard where the horses are turned out in a herd - we did the introducing them over the fence thing and kept them in a paddock next to each other etc... he's now in with the other's but has received a bit of a pasting (he's 3 and thinks he knows it all which isn't going down too well with the other's!!) Things are settling down but he has some quite big bites on his neck and some of them are swollen and sore looking. Any idea what I can put on them to get the swelling down? The skin is a bit broken (nothing deep or nasty looking). He doesnt really like having stuff put on so something I can slap on quickly might be best!! Any suggestions?

Much better he gets herd treatment now, it teaches him to act like a horse! That's why people have problems with big warmbloods who have never been turned out and when they are older they don't back down and cause bigger fights.

Sudocrem is my answer to all bumps and bruises. Although if the skin isn't broken, you could try some arnica gel.

I thought WB's are usually grown in big herds, living inside in barns in winter?? My warmbloods have been very sociable..

I've put some aloe on them and then put some dermoline over the top as a barrier and that seems to be doing the job at the moment... they do look sore though!! Thankfully all seems to be settling down and zigs has now decided that maybe picking fights with the head of the herd wasnt such a good plan....

Not the crazy dressage bred ones, I don't think they are ever normally allowed outside!!

They're quite often totally unhandled until two or three years old - living in large herds prior to being broken in.

As to the OP.

A nice soothing antiseptic cream like Sudocream will help. Keep an eye on the situation though to ensure it doesn't escalate.
