who has used them and what do you think of them then? im curious there has been a bit of info printed about them and how horses go much better in them. personally im not sure about these. thanks
I use one, actually, I drive with it, and it is fantastic. I also know a number of people who use them and would never use anything else again. Saying that though, they do NOT suit every horse and/or rider, so it is a matter of choice really.
I used one without much success. I had no brakes and no steering
. I have neither in a bit though, hoped it might be different in a bitless! I tink they're a good idea, and if I had a horse that responded to aids well then I'd give it another go. But not on Chex.
My horse and I absolutely love our Dr Cooks bitless bridle. My mare is so much happier and easier to control in this then any bit I have tried, (no she doesn't have any problems with her mouth other than its tiny, confirmed by my vet!).
We compete SJ, HT and pleasure rides with no problems whatsoever. However, my mare is a sensitive slightly highly strung Arab who appreciates the gentleness of the bitless bridle and is happy to respect it as it causes her no pain or discomfort. It will not suit all horses, but the bridle comes with a trial period, so I would recommend giving it a try within a safe enviroment (school/enclosed field).
I have one from Donkey mads husband(it seems your a member of every forum Ruth!! lol!) and it is brilliant, very versatile and its a bit like 3 pieces of tack in one, a headcollar(but a very smart one), a pressure halter and a bridle. I too think its a matter of personal choice and of course the opinion of the horse(or donkey).
My OH has just started eventing this year and rides my TB (ex-racehorse) in a Dr Cook's bitless bridle for the showjumping and cross-country phase and went double clear every time. Shame you are not allowed to use it for dressage! Never settles with a bit in his mouth - just uses it to lean on and naff off with you!
