Watched the bitey dog display at Devon County today. Very impressive, of course.
The man that runs their breeding and training program is training a giant schnauzer. He was great, so biddable. Actually more impressive than the shepherds because to my mind he’s basically a terrier.
One thing I was surprised about was all the dogs pulled on the lead, even when walking round the ring when they first came in. Is that to make them look more up for it?

What's he training it to do?

Der Gebrauchshund magazine got banned from the Riesenschnauzer world championships for their honest reporting ;)

Pulling on the lead/towards a crowd or on the track is fine for 'real' or police work but they have to be under control/heeling in between bites for sport.

I think there's one or two in the sport in the UK but I've only known show ones and they were a bit nervy.

@Moobli would know better than me as I think she follows his training on twitter. To my understanding it is to go for licensing as a police dog? He did search sniffing (for keys) and bite work.

Potentially bigger things to train than walking nicely on a lead? Now we live in the country my dogs are feral on the lead and i put no effort into it as they just arent on leads very often, lol!

I wasn’t sure as heeling is a good sign of attentiveness but do see that it’s not a priority.

When doing bitework they want the dogs in high drive and eager to go, which isn’t always conducive to close heelwork. I think it would be nice to see an obedience round too, when the dogs are attentive to the handler and walking to heel but I suppose bitework is the real crowd pleaser and in the days of cuts and shortage of handlers it’s not as easy to put on demonstrations as it was in years gone by.

The National Police Dog Trials is probably the best place to see police obedience. It moves around the regions.

It's quite different to sports obedience.

I used to go to quite a few police dog demos and can't really remember seeing any heelwork.

They said they are not a display team, but they really were good to watch.

That’s just happened apparently. In Warwickshire I think he said. One of yesterday’s combos had come fourth.

There are Airedales doing IGP on the continent, and I think one that does quite well in Israel, if you have a strong desire to watch terriers working in this vague sphere.
Not the strongest biting dogs in the world but they look like a lot of fun.
And of course Claudia Romard's very famous Mr Murphy ;)
