Hello everyone. Please could someone advise me on what bit I should try for a strong, 2 year old Fell Colt whom I hope to show this season. He is bolshy but not viscious and I want to start him gently now so that he will be used to all the tack by the time he is three. I would appreciate any help., Thank you

Personally I would just start in a snaffle and just teach him some manners! If you use a stronger but at this age his mouth and was isn't strong enough for one and by the time you do start to ride and need a stronger bit, there won't be one because he already has one since a youngster and he will be tolerant to it. Like I said, start in a snaffle :)

Thank you Gypsy Cob, should I use when on these happy mouth sweet iron ones or just a normal ss. Thanks again, I appreciate your help.

Yes agree. If you use a rubber or vulcanite bit you may find he chews them, although a lot of people recommend them. Just a straighforward snaffle as the mounthpiece is not too thick.

When you do in hand work, always carry a whip and hold it in your outside hand with the whip facing the front, when you wish him to stop, use a voice command and bring the whip across to "block" his movement. Hopefully this will help teach him without pulling on his mouth too much.

You can also use it when you need him to respect your space, so he doesnt lean on you.

Love fell ponies, wheres the pics?

Thank you Headpiece, I will carry the crop as you say, he is a little bit prone to having a nip, I handle him everyday, he is turned out all day next to another stallion away from the old mares. I have tried to give him company but my horses are mainly elderly now and won't tolerate him so he makes do with toys and a few sheep.I am not very computer friendly, I will ask my teenage daughter to upload some pics of him, I consider that I am lucky to have him
