Biting his chestnuts?

My horse does suffer from mites and usually you see him stamping etc but lately i haven't seen him stamping but he keeps biting at his chestnuts on his hind legs making them bleed!

Could this just be mites or something different?
 
I would have thought mites or lice, maybe biting is more effective at relieving the itch than stamping.

What did you use before to kill the mites - can you use the same stuff? Or maybe clip his legs out to see what is going on.

Are his chestnuts quite big? Maybe ask the farrier to trim them back in case they are long and catching on his legs as he moves.

He must be quite agile to bite his chestnuts on his back legs - can't be anything wrong with his back
