Hi last winter my l/w cob started biting his legs from the knee down the vet thought it was mites but he only does it in the winter so he didnt have the injection, his legs are clipped out hes not really in mud but theyre washed and dried every night, hes on Bliss bedding which is lovely and dry, but this year it seems worse hes got patches of blood in the morning, he has magnetic wraps on over night as i think it could be arthritis he's 20 and his legs fill a bit over night, i put him on glucosamine for about a month now i dont know what else to do any ideas???
Thanks in advance :)

If your vet says it isn't mites then that's ok but i would still get a skin scrape just to be sure as i've had a pony that had mites and he would bite his legs till they bled! Also I wouldn't leave magnetic boots on all night , they could be making his legs very warm and itchy - perfect for harbouring any type of mite or biting insects. The magnetic field in the boots is designed to stimulate blood circulation and therefore will be ' heating' his legs up maybe beyond what is actually comfortable for him..

good point hadnt thought of that ill leave them off tonight see if theres any difference he did his tendon and ligaments 5yrs ago and thought they may help with the filling just seems strange that its only since hes been coming in wouldnt mites be all year? a friend suggested trying switch which is for sweet itch?

Thanks 4 the reply he's been on bliss for years it's hypoallergenic with eucalyptus really one of the best and he stands in for a few hours through the summer everyday before exercise so would have there would be a reaction then as well but a good suggestion :) leaving his boots off didn't help so think I'll get the vet out this week

How are you washing his legs, could he be irritated by the towelling dry, it could be worth trying leaving them to dry naturally for a few days.

Anybody had a horse that's been given the jab? Or know of any products for mites? Would it hurt for him to have the jab if its not mites?! When u say in the bedding would I need to change his whole bed sorry questions galore! I've been rubbing sudocrem

I had the jab for our pony who had got very bad mites (chewing her legs off!) and it worked for her with no side effects. Have a word with your vet about it. There is also a natural product which you can sprinkle regularly in your horses bed to keep the little critters at bay. Try looking at www.diatomX.co.uk to find out more about it.
