Biting suggestions for VERY strong horse.

We have had success in a similar sounding situation by swapping his everyday NS tranz lozenge snaffle for NS tranz universal gag. Same shape in the mouth, different sidepieces. However, en route to that we hae tried all sorts of other things that made no difference whatsoever to his pulling/lack of manners etc. We've had cut mouths - the lot. I suspect he has decided to compromise on the NS continental gag and modify his behaviour a bit.

my coloured is a git .....

- but what a lovely, quality git he is.
Looks as bold as brass - he must give you a lovely ride over fences.

Ah thankyou, he is lovely to jump, you just have to sit tight and adopt one of those properly old school hunting positions on the decent!

charlie, im going to look in to the kineton noseband, but don't know much about them, how do they actually work? what sort of bit do you ride them with?
thanks for any info!
have emailed bit bank person to see if any suggested bits are around that i could borrow!

i used to showjump an insanely strong dutch mare (16.2hh and built like a brick out house, pro men couldnt hold her!) in a W mouthpiece cheltenham gag. think this is a polo bit too......its got 2 normal snaffle mouthpieces with offset joints so when you take a pull it looks like a W

It called a Barry gag, and yes he primarily a polo bit. IMHO the strongest bit you can use, generally for tanks!

Hi,

Ok, half of what will work depends on the following factors-
* where he puts his head when running on, is it down low, on the vertical, above the bit or does he snatch?
* Has he got a fleshy mouth or a small mouth?, big tounge and bar or small?
* Do YOU pull against him when he goes? I have very strong hunters but ride all on the buckle, they are bitted correctly and I never use my hands to pull unless abs. nes.
*Does he take hold of the bit between his teeth and run? What does he school comfortably in at home?
* What level of flatwork is he schooled to? If you show jump, what do you show jump in?
*Does he open mouth? You've said that grackle has no effect, so he's not crossing his jaw to take hold. Can you feel him grind his teeth?
* can you ride with two reins? ever tried a double bridle? how does he work in this? (the way a horse works in a double tells me a lot as to how to bit them for strong / fast work)
Answer these questions and i'll try help you, I'm not the bit bank but feel like it some times as am always having to sort our hunters out!

have PM'ed you ^^^ thanks for all suggestions
