Hi I was hoping for a bit of advice really. I have a cob who goes really well in a hackamore.... however, every now and then he can 'walk through' the hackamore and it can take a couple of 'hey, I'm here' half halts (I use my seat and voice also) until he listens again. I have noticed on his cheek his fur looks like it's slightly starting to rub? Anyway, I've been looking at Dr cooks and wondering what people think about these bridles? I want something he will listen too but won't rub his face if it is used. I tend to ride on a loose rein and mainly use seat and voice aids but every now and then I use the rein. More often then not he's spot on but sometimes he just wants to keep going. Any advice greatly appreciated.
 
I use a dr cooks for XC as my flower hackamore isn’t enough and a bit is too much.

The issue I have with the Dr Cooks is once it tighens, it doesn’t seem to release? But having said that, every horse I’ve ever ridden it has gone very well in it and my mare is super sensitive.

I’ve never had issues with rubbing either and everything rubs my mare.
 
Does it need droping down a hole, it might be touching the cheek bone ? or wrapping some soft material around the top of it. you could try a dr cooks but my strong pony listens better to a hackamore, my other horses go lovely in a dr cooks even when they are very excited, regarding the crossunder not releasing spray the crossunder with mane and tail spray works a treat, { but don't get it on your reins}
 
I use an English hackamore on my strong mare which she respects and gives me control on the odd occasions I need to call on it (I ride predominately from the seat). I tried a Dr Cooks on her but she hated the face grabbing type action and just went backwards to get away from it.
