Bitless bridles????

Hi I have a pony who has a jointed fixed ring eggbutt snaffle in at the moment it fits right and everything but he doesn't like having it in at all he chews it and pull in his head as if trying to relieve pressure or something like that. Most of the time he's so focused on the bit and not actually on what he's doing. I ride with little to no rein contact with him as that's what he seems to prefer. I've also tried other bits on him and he never seems happy with any of them.
Do you think I should go bitless with him? And if so is there a sort of transition or do you just change it and act like nothing has happened? Also any styles/brands that you would reccomended?
Sorry if I sound a bit stupid with some of those questions but I don't know anyone who rides bitless and I never have either.
Also I forgot to mention he's not strong or silly he's usually quite slow and a bit of a plod. He can be quite forwards sometimes though so I would like a bridle that has some brakes. Although I know that you have to be careful with how you use a bitless bridle and you should be soft with your hands which I am anyways. And yes his teeth were checked last week and everything was fine.
 
I have a light rider bridle and I think it's a brilliant bit of kit. Look at the website and the videos on you tube.
 
I used a cross-under bitless bridle on my ex-racer. Think it was a barefoot one. She was like a different horse in it. She was always anxious with a bit and it just seemed to wind her up more so I went bitless and never looked back - she was much happier. I just rode as I normally would from the off but would perhaps suggest riding in an enclosed area first until horse is happy. I never had any trouble with brakes or steering in the bitless.
 
Do you have a riding instructor who can advise? Just because the pony is not responding to you does not necessarily mean that there is anything wrong with the equipment, there is always pilot error......
 
I just started riding in a halter (small paddock or school to start) and went from there. There are a lot of different types, so you may need to try a them before you find what your horse prefers.

Riding bitless is no where near as complicated as some people like to make it sound, so just go and have some fun.
 
Thank you guys where I'm at there are several arenas so I'll start riding him in them. Definitely going to go bitless though! And yes Cortez I do have an instructor who agrees that it is not me and has even tried him herself and he was the same. We've tried different bits and she is very experienced in bitting horses and has got everyone else's bits who she has changed right for the horses and they are very happy. I know this because they are on the same yard as me it's not just what she has said.
But I'm going to look into bitless bridles and decide which one is right for him. Thank you guys so so much
