Well I tried out the waterford bit today and I was gentry with it allowing him to get used to the feel of it had a couple of trots and when I asked to come back he still fight a bit I think I could be experting a mircale to happen in such a short time!! I just thought he might of actually lister to me and come back staight away hey no head up and fought with me. Now Im going to give it a week to see if it can make any differnce. This will give plenty of time for him to get used to it otherwise I back to square one with brake falliures!!!

Have you tried a market harbourough (sp!), I've just stated using one on a horse I am bringing back into work and it's made a real difference. He's not a strong horse but he does throw his head around if you take up a contact, the MH seems to have stopped him doing this and he is now working quite nicely.

I would try it with a normal snaffle first though, wouldn't want to use it with a Waterford.

Bojangles, have you tried asking with a quick give-and-take movement, to give him nothing to pull against, little to object to? it may be that he takes exception to how you are asking, rather than the bit you are asking it with... just an idea.

Thats what I done with his french link and it did work for a while. Im not a fan of MH so wont be trying that thanks anyway. The stange thing is that you can drop the reins in canter and he will stay in the extracy same pace I show a friend whist out hacking and she couldnt understang it?? Its when you want to stop he fights it?? Its like he just wants to work and work which is a good thing just would like to be able to half halt and get a respone when asked. I do the give take on both reins and its not same as Im used too. Im going to try for a week with this one as he doesnt like change so Im thinking it could take a bit of getting used too. He isnt strong after a jump well I havnt jump him in this one yet? He normaly comes back to trot without me asking him sightly good silghty not espec sj. Saddler coming out in a couple of weeks too. I know Im sightly panicing as in the pastd we had no control and this what worriers me he's a big boy to be playing up again!! I need to reasure on how Im riding too as in the pastd I used to relay on the reins a bit too much due to him p*** off he havnt done that for such a long time. Its my fear thats worry me now.

I have found a Dutch Gag has been the best bit for my steam train
wink.gif

He is a Maxi Cob and pulls like an engine, tried allsorts from the Myler French Link to the Pelham and curb etc but two weeks ago I bought a Dutch Gag and put it on the bottom ring and it works a treat.
I have to admit, I do 'nag' with the reins a little too much and I am concious I must stop this, when I change my way of riding he goes superbley.
The Waterford should be half an inch bigger than the usual size you ride in, have you allowed for that?

My horse is young and over excitable but whilst he is learning i need some brakes, I am rather sick of looking like a 'Thelwell' and bouncing around the top of bridges, rivers and other scary objects ( God, I must look a prat!!!)
Have a go with the Gag, relax your contact and let us know how you get on.
All the best

Ive tried the gag and that doesnt work I even had it with two reins so thats sitting doing nothing!! I got the bit of from a bit bank so they advised me on the bit and size thanks also suggest a ns 8023 one its quite scray looking so I decide to go with the waterford for now! When we canter I normally just have one hand and just go with him as he doesnt fight at the begening?? I have him on looseish rein when we trot. I think I might just take him round one of the fields at the farm and just canter him for a bit in between do up's and down transtions see if that makes any difference. Otherwise its going be another bit not looking foward to that!

How long have you had him and how old is he?
What breed is he, have you had teeth and back checked?

What is your ground relationship like?
sorry for all the questions but i am scratching my head for you as to why this is happening.
I feel for you with this matter because i am experiencing the same problem with my fool.
A lot of my problems came down to trust, as well as my impatience, but thats just me lol.

Do you use a standing martingale?

He 18yrs 17.1hh IDXDWB Ive had him for 10 years been though hell though out our time together! His had full mot as he just had his massage the other day saddler coming out in couple of weeks. He does get pamper quite a bit!! O he does have arthitiss but its under control now thank god as i was getting quite worrid over it. Hes on A&P Power and powermance only a a very small amount and half oringal a chalf. This havnt changed thoughout the year so its not his food. Im just putting this down to the fact he can move now without pain and is actually willing to work maybe I havnt got the work load right at the moment?? I would just like to have brakes when I ask not having to pull so hard. Grounderwork all ok can be a bit silly at times he is very good though voice bless him! I just dont want to overwork him when his not fit enother for the load or is it him saying his bored with amount given???? Our trust is strong it is at the moment getting tested due to what happern in the pastd. The thing is when I dont get the responsed re stopping he doesnt go faster??? Its just like him saying I want to carrying on he does stop in the end!! O I have a breastplate with running martgale as he does tend to throw his head up and fight that way and for me when he throw his toys out of his pram!! Head up in trot down in canter lends on bit?? Bloodly nightmare!!! So Im thinking his needing poll pressure and something to pull him up so he cant lean on it and take hold?? This is all new to me as hes been in french link for years and I dont know enough about bits to be sure whats best for him. O he doesnt like jointed bits. Think a phone call to the bit bank is going to have to be done I give it till nxt week as hes only had it in once.
