So Lottie is currently in a full cheek French link that I already had. I chose this over my loose ring as I feel she needs something that is still in her mouth. However she backs off the French link where as she seems happier in my friends full cheek rs sprenger.

However I have her in a Micklem as her teeth were horrible when I got her and she didn't like any kind of noseband over her teeth. I also use it for in hand work and lunging. The full cheeks get a bit close to the rings on the bridle and if rather not have a full cheek long term.

So would a D ring be better but still help with steering?

D'd can help with steering yes, but I do prefer a full cheek (they help more).. i've known D rings to rub thinner skinned horses.

I'd try school her for your steering, or have some lessons from a good instructor :) But that just my opinion!

Yes already doing that, it's just the sprenger and Neue schule buts are so expensive I'd rather not have to buy 2 bits (cheepscate).

Thanks

It's best to wean your self off cheeked bits if you can , I feel they do just mask the issue , that the horse is not turning off the riders body and leg aids .

She is getting the turning better. I've got my friends bit for another 10 days or so so maybe work on it for that time then crack on with an eggbut. I'll chat to my instructor we left it that id try my friends but but I've not seen him since.

Thanks never thought about masking a problem!!

This is going to sound weird but in an emergency.. if you need to turn a tight circle and your horse is one to open their mouth when they get excited... the d-ring goes straight into their mouth.. If i was going to use an eggbut or d-ring now I would only use with bit rings.. My mare backs off a loose ring and prefers the stability or a full cheek. :)

I don't see how a D ring would go into the mouth? Do you mean a baucher?
Personally I use fulmer for still + steering, baucher for extra still, eggbut as normal and loosering for more movement. I have a D ring as it came in the mouthpiece I wanted but never used it much. But this is just my own theory made up using my ponies :p
