Dizz has got me wondering...

When her bit goes in she often wans to rub her mouth. She takes every opportunity to rub it when being ridden as well.

So, I'm wondering if a different metal would be better. She's currently in a Myler.

Thoughts?

Apart from the rubbing does she feel happy in it in other ways?

Both Daisy and Lil have always rubbed their noses as soon as you put a bridle on but I always assumed that was more to do with the type of noseband.

Have you tried different nosebands to rule that out?

mine rubs when first bridled and after the ride too. As soon as it is in his mouth he plays with it and bangs it up and down on his tongue with this mouth wide open, he spits out any food he had in his mouth, he then rubs on walls and fencing ! he soon settle though and once he has I do his noseband up.

Ta folks :)

Have tried different nosebands but no difference.

Doesn't seem to make a difference if the weather is hot, or humid, or dry or wet.

The only time she settled today, in a two and a half hour hack (half an hour at the pub half way round, vast majority walking, lots of hills), was when we had a good sustained trot, then she listened and had a beautiful steady head carriage :)

She takes every opportunity to rub her mouth/ nostril on the right hand side. This only happens when she is tacked up. Once she has been allowed a good rub she tends to have a good shake, starting at her nose and ending at the tip of her tail!

Was wondering if a Nathe bit would work (non-metal). She is okay to being back down the transitions, except when we first start - then she is a resistant and argumentative bat :o

I'm with Nailed on this one. Lils has a KK and goes very well in it although I've never ridden her in any other bit so I couldn't compare. The other, less expensive option might be to try a sweet iron. D had a sweet iron and salivated beautifully in it.

Lil has one with a lozenge. I'm a little hazy on the difference between that and a French Link but I think its kinder? I think the French Link being flat puts more pressure on the tongue?

Ive never tried a Myler. Cate went from a vulcanite dutch gag to a french link loose ring KK and she is 100 times happier. She mouths up so well! X

Lou x

Ah yes, I read that the other day (on here I think lol).

When she was at the AHT at Newmarket they rode her in a Nathe; the lozenge or French Link I can't remember which and my machine has wiped my emails so I can't check (flaming encryption stuff :( ).

*wibbles off back to Google to have a look see*

Hm. How did you decide on that one Lou?

Dizz has been in:

Pelham, on two reins - sat on bum and told me to naff off :o lol
Three ring gag with a Happy Mouth - wasn't too happy about that (was on the mildest ring);
Myler - broad barrel;
Hackamore - now that was fun lol. She didn't seem to like the nose pressure;
Snaffle - eggbutt.

Nosebands:
None;
Cavesson;
Crank - done up loose;
Mexican grakle - she'd started opening her mouth. Hated the nose band, but seems to have stopped opening her mouth even when not wearing the MG.
