Any suggestions on good bits for hunting an ex-masters horse who thinks he should still be at the front of the field! Previously hunted by man, Leo is a big strong irish sports horse who knows how to use his shoulders!

We hack in a waterford. He went well enough in a pelham with a dr bristol mouth piece but by the end of the morning the curb seemed to incite some upwards antics! Tried a continental gag - ignored!!

Heard good things about the myler bits, but know nothing about them?? Suggestions welcomed ...

I'm affraid I cant be of any help but want to sypathise as I have the same problem with my cob. Although I am already at the front as I whip in! I have tried gags, dexter, doubles. I want to try a neue scheul waterford nelson gag as my last resort otherwise I'm just going to have to live with him. If you find something that works PLEASE let mew know. All I want is a little more control without putting the handbrake on & stopping him from going forward.

Mines a cow bag out hunting, always wants to be up the front, I stick a Military bit in her mouth with one rein on the strongest setting, can just about hold her in that.

She must not be out of control - or you wouldn't take her, i think take her in as little as you can manage - at least it gives you a work out too!!

Also, in my experience, i 'd much like to see a horse (pulling) and jumping and going than getting a gob in the mouth and stopping, it happens so much and a shame. Not saying thats you but it is something to be aware of.

Pelham with a Dr B mouthpiece? Could you tell me where you found this as it could be useful for me. I am currently experimenting with bits/brakes and have found the Waterford gag works best so far but I get a lot of head throwing and he schools well in a Dr B so the Pelham version would be interesting to try.

Try the myler combination. I have started riding my sisters big jumping horse who has just discovered he is a very powerful 17.3 stallion and when he sees a jump he wants to jump it!!!! its the only bit that works for us. We only use it for jumping at home and at competitions, other wise he schools and hacks in a snaffle.
its pretty pricey but really works very well.

great - thanks, have two weeks until the opening meet so four hunting days to try some new bits! Will let you know how we get on - subject to not wrapping ourselves around a telegraph pole or something equally stupid!

SueAllen - I found the bit in our local tack shop, Patchetts in Hertfordshire.
