Cortez. I agree with points made about it's mostly the hands attached to the reins and not the bit itself that causes the damage or discomfort for horse.
As you said it's good to know just how much harm we can do with harsh hands and keep our minds open to alternatives. Some of the bits I've seen in the catalogues look more like instruments of torture!
