Bits - knowing what does what

After my recent post about potentially changing Sid bit and the advice I received - thanks for that everyone - i was wondering how I can improve my knowledge in the subject.
I often watch posts flying about various exotic sounding bits and what they're used for or the schooling issues they might help with and wonder how on earth you all know all that?
Is there a book or website that anyone could recommend to try to improve my knowledge?
Particularly interested in improving the knowledge about what problems different bits might help you solve so I can build up my experience.

Theres a book called the Allens illustrated guide to bits and bitting which I think is quite good- I picked it up off ebay quite cheap as I think it is quite expensive new.
