if you add a flash to a snaffle & so on, what stronger bit is it like?
for a horse that tanks of in a snaffle with a plain noseband would adding a flash make the bit stronger or would you go up a bit & to what?

head down, grabs the bit & only stops when he wants too

What would be the difference between a flash noseband and a drop noseband? I sone stronger than the other?

If he grabs the bit then you could try a waterford, a flash will stop him opening his mouth, a grakle would stop him crossing his jaw, I think a drop is meant to be better at keeping their mouths closed than a flash (but IMO they are ugly!) I think flash nosebands wre originally invented so that you could use a standing martingale, but don't quote me on that!

drop nosebands aren't ugly! they suit some types of horses! i combine a drop with a french link and it works really well! he gets strong sometimes but if i use a stronger bit then i will hook him when jumping!

what about riding him in a double bridle for a while to stop him from tanking? the bridoon will raise him and its easier to stop!

also try to find a bit that he cannot grab, such as waterford or a Dr.Bristol! even a wilke snaffle will help ( snaffle with 2 inner loops on inside of ring)

hope it helps!

thanks.

he doesnt tank with the pelham, hes just not happy with it just now.

will look into the other bits

Ive been riding my boy in a grackle now as fed up of him tanking with me and being rude! He is ridden in a very soft bit now, and 98% of the time is fab in the noseband/bit combination. This is because he cant evade by crossing his jaw, so means I can keep him straighter without him evading me, and he is much lighter in the hand!

wonder if it is worth trying a different noseband.

my problem is you can school him in a headcollar if you want but hacking is the problem lol
