Bits.....which ones and how do you decide on size??????

Was just wondering how you measure for the correct size of bit for your horses mouth?

Also, with so many different bits available, how do you decide which is the best bit, be it, rubber, sweet iron, etc?

I try everything with a 5.5inch (these are all 16hh+ horses) and if it is too big go down to 5 and if it is too small go up to 6 - not too hard

As for deciding which bit, that is all about feel TBH. Again, it is trial and error.

It is easiest to try something in that would be close and adjust from there. You can take a rough measurement using a piece of baler twine or similar placed carefully into the mouth if you have no idea where to start and obviously mark either side of the mouth. With regard to type, its really down to the individual. I tend to start off with a loose ring french link if i know nothing about the bitting history. What size horse, how old, any work history? pm me if you want?

Use string (something safe/similar) and add a 1/4" extra for each side of mouth or a bit you may have spare or came with horse and judge by this.

Not meaning anyone particularly but, in general, I find it amazing at how so many people do not know how to measure for a bit,

get a plastic tape meausure go corner to corner if it is a fixwd buy one the size it says if it is going to be a loose ring bit add a quater inch each side!

I use a wooden spoon then mark each side, or you could go to yr local tack shop and hire a bit sizer.
