does anyone have any ideas on what bit should be tried on a horse that has had his mouth hardened by being in a riding school for a year , he has definitely changed since I rode him a year ago , he is responsive but had deadened somewhat, he was in a snaffle and was changed to a plastic bar gag, not working ,needs schooling again, but dont want to go too harsh yet, my adivice to the owner was go back to the snaffle and re school, any other input please

How are his teeth?

What do you mean by deadened? DOes he lean on the bit or get above the bit?

I would go back to schooling again in my favourite bit, a loose ring french link or other loose ring linked snaffle and see how he goes, assuming teeth are all ok. Your advice to the owner was right I feel
