Normally, i ride the mare in a full cheek snaffle...

i carried on with this as she seemed ok in this, except recently as shes tossing her head up (i think thats due to needing the dentist and thats booked)!

I didnt question the bit shes currently in - she has good breaks when she listens to me... shes 4 and i want something as mild as possible in her mouth...and kind to her..

i know the saying "if it aint broke dont fix it"... but im just wondering if im doing right by her having that in her mouth or something else??

p.s - shes off work until the dentist has been (and physio...and saddle fitter :D) lol!
 
If it suits her then I really wouldn't change it. A full cheek snaffle is a great bit, esp for babies. Is it a single joint? If so then that would be the only thing I would change as many horses do go better in a french lozenge than they do a single joint. Having said that though, I have no idea on your horses mouth conformation so am just suggesting generally!

nice to hear other peoples views and just wondered whats best for her :)

will stick to what she is good in for now :)
 
Ditto glosgirl, just to add my green little mare is also in a full cheek, but is much happier isna french link with a lozenge in the middle than a single jointed snaffle.

She has quite a low palatte I think, so I can imagine the single joint was perhaps uncomfortable for her when pressure was applied.

I've also gone for the hi-copper mouthpiece, which she mouths a lot more than stainless steel. She has a habit of stiffening through her jaw, and I find this really helps :)

yeh - i was told about the french link rather than what she has now.

Bits are like a minefield to me - shes a lovely sweet mare - unlike my last two which lived in gags (they wer nuts).... lol.
