ive had my mare in several bits.

shes a rising 4yr TB exracer. she was raced in a dexter.
ive tried her in a loose ring french link, and a single jointed eggbutt snaffle, but yet she still looks uncomfortable in her mouth, shes had teeth done ect recently so all is fine, she constantly messes with her head, tilts etc, opens her mouth, tongue out, just generally doesnt seem happy, the bit i am using is perhaps a tiny bit on the large side, so going to invest in a smaller one too. there are so many snafles out there i really dont know which route to go down, she has got quite a fleshy tongue, and small mouth.

i was thinking sweet iron, copper bit maybe
or happy mouth - but heard bad things about these, i.e chew marks easily
then theres joints, lozenge, singlejoint etc

any advice welcome !!!!

also in CR

I've found a lozenge to work well in those with sensitive mouths, might be worth a try
Or a different material other than metal for example a nathe??
I had a "plastic" happy mouth and it was horrible, the chew marks were very sharp and lethal.

If you fancy trying something 'outside the box' the peewee might offer a great solution for you

otherwise a mullen mouth snaffle with a mouthpiece that is quite thin in diameter (not to be confused with narrow in length, lol!) would probably do the job

Hi stace1,
I'd think beyond the bit, + think about how she's learning a different way of life (assuming she's out of racing now?), + concentrate on breaking her in all over again.
I think that maybe too much emphasis is put on bits at the moment, as it's commercially good for business, when in fact we would get better results from equine friends if we concentrated more on how we ride them.
Bits these days are overwhelming, but simple horsemanship remains.
Your horse is a baby horse, + she's raced. If she were mine, i'd put her in a straight bar vulcanite, or simple snaffle encourage the little lady to move forwards, + start from scratch.
Hope i've helped BS x

Another vote for the PeeWee. I have found it excellent for horses with fleshy tongues and little room in their mouths. IMO we can't expect horses to work correctly if they are uncomfortable in their mouths. I really dislike single jointed bits (although I have used them in my time). Fortunately our knowledge of mouth conformation and bit design have moved on since 'the good old days'.

thankyou

and yes brandysnap it is so overwhelming far too much choice now a days, and ye i am trying to take each day as it comes with her, as shes very oppinionated, but owuld really like to get it so shes comfortable in the mouth
