hi all, after some bitting advice. My mare is in a 5 inch pony egg butt french link snaffle. She is not strong etc, really doesnt need anything fancy. The roof of her mouth appears to be really low, lower than what i have noticed on any other horse i have bridled. I will try and take a photo later to show what i mean. I have struggled to find anything she is happy in, she isnt one for lots of contact on her mouth and puts her head up. She is ok in this snaffle but takes a long time to settle and soften. when i look into the side of her mouth with the bit in, it just doesnt look like there is alot of room. Any advice appreciated.
 
My tb is like that; thick tongue, low roof, not a lot of space in there. The hut I found for him that fits his mouth really well and keeps him happy, is a Myler comfort snaffle with the Mullen mouthpiece. It isn't thick, and the way it is shaped makes it sit on his mouth well.
 
I have a Lusitano with a very fleshy small mouth. He goes best in a medium thickness (16mm) double jointed baucher as there is no harsh action on his bars or tongue.

These are dressage legal.

Have the same with my TB started with a neue schule training bit which was good but then tried a myler - think its a wide portal one which is fantastic. I now actually have control of my horse. He is very light and sensitive in his mouth and I tend do do most my aids through that as its what he prefers
 
Your girl sounds like she has a similar mouth confo to mine. She also didn't settle in a french link, with any cheek piece, but she is soft mouthed. She goes beautifully in a NS verbindent loose ring with the 12mm (bradoon) mouthpiece. Although it is a v thin mouthpiece, she is much happier in it than a slightly thicker one, and the shape suits her mouth well and avoids the tongue pressue which she hates and straigher shaped bits give her. I also tried a myler MB32 (also dressage legal) and it was a little better for her, but def not as good as the verbindent.

I'd try and hire some from a bit hire shop so you can see just what suits her best without shelling out a fortune on loads of bits!!
 
My mare has a low palate and very large tongue which bulges out the sides of her mouth. After experimenting with several different bits I have found a french link baucher to be the best for her.
 
Myler french link. Much dearer than other french links - of course :rolleyes: - but much better. Much thinner mouthpiece and is curved slightly forward to give more room for the tongue etc. They're dressage legal. :)
