Hi I have bitted many horse before but none this young and welsh with such a small mouth. He is only 2 Welsh D but a client wants to show him in hand and on 1st outing he was so naughty she has decided he needs a bit and apparently is allowed one.

I know little about showing and would normally start something in a happy mullen mouth just something simple....

Basically does any one know what is allowed in the show ring inhand and what would people recommend as his mouth is unusually small and slightly parrot.

Advice much appriciated as I don't want to get this wrong

My 2yr old was only 13h ish when she was bitted with a teeny head.

First she has a loose ring, happy mouth with a lozenge, but this was too much fun and she stuck her tounge over it. So now she has a dinky little Cambridge snaffle.

You could also go for the traditional nylon inhand bit - I just couldn't find one in a 4.25" when I needed one!

my 2 yr old welsh A has a loose ring black rubber straight bit which seems to be what most people use.

I can see where the owner is coming from - had exactly the same problem this summer when I thought I would do it without bitting - soon changed my mind on that - these welshies can be v. v. cheeky:D

Showing wise it is unusual to see a 2 yr old in the ring without a bit.

I was going to suggest the brass loose ring with a rubber/nylon straight bar mouth piece. That is what I used on my two year old this year for showing.

Some people even show yearlings in bits. I used a white halter when Rox was a yearling, but was told, showing etiquette was to use a bit for two year olds upwards. xx :)

Stinky did not like the conventional straight rubber bit that many people show in so I purchased a copper peanut jointed bradoon - small and neat and he liked it so much that I used this when I started riding him.

Many horses over two are shown with bits in and if he is a big pushy lad then time to get a bridle on him so you have control.

Personally i think the nylon straight bar in hand bits are ghastly. They are very hard and push down on the tongue. Very uncomfortable when you look at their shape and horses mouth conformation
