help needed on chosing a bit for my pony

he is currently being ridden in a snaffle full cheek fulmer he is ok to be schooled and hacked out and isnt strong but when it comes to cross country he just puts his head in between his legs and he is off
would a pelham be ok ? i dont think a gag would help as he just puts his down and im worried that it would make it worse??

any advise welcome

I would say not a pelham as they often would encorage a horse to put its head down a gag might work but what noseband are you using. You might find that using a grackle or maybe a flash might help more than changing the bit.
 
maybe try a grackle big difference from flash. Sisters horse was very strong hunting in a flash tried a grackle and works much better.
 
My horse was like this and a Pelham (being a curb bit) encouraged him to put his chin through his legs and onto his girth.

I found the NS trans-lozenge universal bit very helpful. It is not as strong as a Dutch gag, but is good at encouraging a higher head carriage.

Generally speaking curbs (pelhams, kimblewicks and weymouths) encourage head lowering and gag bits encourage head raising.

I used to ride my horse in a waterford full check, it helped, but was not as good as the NS universal.
