Just started doing a bit of showing at a low local level for something different to do and I am struggling finding a suitable bit. Firstly I tried a rugby pelham (thought keep it simple) he was too pokey and heavy in it. The design was a lozenge one as it was the only one I could find in his size.
Next I tried him in a shires double which he went really well in, but the bradoon was occasionally slipping over the top of the weymouth, so I was getting off and sorting it out before continuing - not an option in the ring! I got my instructor to look at it to check that the bridle was adjusted correctly and it was.
So next I went for a korsteel set with a smaller port no slipping, and he went well in it at home with no problems. However at the show when we are hanging around in big classes and he is bored & messing with it, his tongue was going fractionally purple which TBH I found pretty alarming. I discussed it with his dentist and he suggested that I need to go back to a larger port given he is a KWPN with the usual chunky tongue.
So what should I try next? I have seen a neue schule weymouth with an angle, but could not find anyone in the shop to discuss suitability of use, or do I go back and try to find a rugby pelham with single joint? Ideas gratefully received, do not want to go back to a slipping bradoon...
ETA: his dentist after the discussion has also made some adjustments to give me a little more space and added some rest seats.
