for a holstien , typical refined head , quite a large tongue , bit fussy in his mouth , teeth fine , saddle fine , my contact not necessarily perfect! but by no means 'bad'

so , now we are sure everything is physically ok looking to try different bits , some days he's really good , but often throws his head which spoils an otherwise very nice picture , more so if he's just a bit that way out! he can sometiomes be a little tight at the poll

any suggestions that are anything other than a short term correctional issue need to be dressage legal please , thankyou

Firstly, it would be good to know what bit he's in at the moment, and also how old he is, what level he works at and how fit he is, as throwing his head about doesn't necessarily mean he is uncomfortable in his mouth. If he's still young or not very fit it could be that he's simply not very balanced or is finding the work very tiring, and is trying to evade you for those reasons. In this case, a change of bit won't make a difference, only making sure he works correctly from behind to build up the correct muscles and the strength to balance himself with the weight of the rider will help.

I have a similar problem with my mare so interested to read responses.

Just awaiting delivery of a NS Verbindend as they are supposed to be good for horse with small mouths/big tongues.

I have tried a hanging cheek with and without myler mouthpiece and she hated these, but they were both recommended so may be worth a go for your chap as they all respond differently.

I have a comfort headpiece on mine , not sure if it makes any difference . Have ordered some flexi reins to see if that helps, though these are not dressage legal, I'm just hoping they may help us break the lean, half-halt, throw up head cycle at home!

i'm afraid he has neither youth , lack of fitness or unbalanced/basic level of schooling as an excuse

we are pretty sure it's down to mouth confirmation & sometimes attitude , though i don't think he's in pain as such

he prefers bits with a thinner mouth piece & little tongue pressure , currently in a jp french link loose ring ,

no experience of the ns verbidend , it looks similar to the kk ultra? ( which we have tried & failed on )

i was starting to wonder about a mullen mouth? or even something with a port ( though not BD legal with a snaffle bridle i think )

i'm just starting to flounder a little as my bitting knowledge is hardly extensive

In that case, what about any of these:

They are dressage legal, have relatively thin mouthpieces, reduced tongue pressure and they don't move much in the mouth so are less likely to encourage him to fuss.
