Think my boy has been reading the updated version of 'bitting evasions - how to get your own way and your human has no control'

he is fine when he is getting his own way, if i ask him to stand or slow down from canter/gallop then we get the nose up in the air/tongue out/cross jaw/twist head and for good measure quick yank down to do the trick...

He is in a myler correctional ported bit, had his teeth done end of august and has done this for a long long time...

Every now and again have a go at swopping bits about.

Most of the ride he has his tongue stuck out and has done since i got him 9 years ago.

Thinking of trying a loose ringe with lozenge - am i being mad - will i lose all brakes???

Is it worth trying something without the independent side movement? Incase it is the varying bar pressure he is evading? Alternatively perhaps something with a smaller port incase it is the roof of his mouth that is sensitive?

You could try him in a hackamore. One of mine decided he didn't like bits any more a while back so I swapped him into a hackamore which he has been very happy in. He used to have a head-in-the-air evasion when he was feeling particularly frisky. He can get strong in the hackamore, but then he used to get strong in a snaffle too.

I would try a loose ring with lozenge then a waterford if the loose ring fails. If he sticks his tongue out its prob because its fat. You mayt have addressed that with the port but he may not have enough room in the palae, therby creating another problem. Waterfors are very good for horses with not much room in the mouth.

As with any bit though, you need to school too, so he understands signals and uses his hindquarters. If he is on his forehand at all then it is physically harder for him to stop.

My boy is inclined to shove his head in the air, on one occasion when i first got him i even briefly tasted his ear, mmm. Now when i hack him out in company i use a standing martingale, i dont have it overly tight just enough to stop us having a battle. Good luck finding something that works for you both.
