Hi all,
I ride my mare in a Cavesson bridle with Myler comfort snaffle for dressage. She can sometimes snatch, stick her ears in my face and tank off, but we are schooling through that and I am also getting the vet out to check her teeth.
When jumping however, I need more brakes because she gets very strong and can be a bit difficult to steer, especially when the jumps get bigger.
At the moment I ride her in a grakle bridle and 3 ring gag with a peanut, which swivels so allows independent side movement. She's been going fairly well in it, although does have a tendency to curl up.
When I put her snaffle on, she accepts the bit without issue. When I put the gag on, she was happy enough at first, then she started to grit her teeth for a few moments before accepting the bit. Yesterday she downright refused to accept the bit. I pressed my thumb more firmly into the corner of her mouth and she opened her mouth but when I went to gently slide the bit in, she reared up. Eventually I managed to get her bridle on and rode her in it and she was a bit fussy to start with but soon settled.
I don't ride her in that bit very often, only for jumping and sometimes for hacking. It is a loose ring and I use bit guards. I rarely use the bottom ring except at competitions if she is excited and strong.
As I say, I am getting the vet out to check her teeth.
I have been thinking about changing her bit, to something that gives me brakes and steering but is maybe not quite as strong as the gag? Maybe somthing that has a similar mouthpiece to the myler comfort snaffle but has some leverage.
I was thinking about the following bits:
Sweet Iron Copper Tom Thumb
Sprenger KK Universal / Neue Schule Tranz Universal
Myler short shank combination with low port comfort snaffle
Or on www.equiport.com
Blue Sweet Iron Happy Tongue 2.5 Ring Gag
Blue Sweet Iron Colin Miles 2.5 Ring Cartwheel Gag
Blue Sweet Iron Buster Roller 2.5 Ring Cartwheel Gag
Blue Sweet Iron Happy Tongue Butterfly Flip
Blue Sweet Iron Colin Miles Butterfly Flip
Blue Sweet Iron Buster Roller Butterfly Flip
Does anyone have any experience with any of the above bits, advice or suggestions about what to try?
Thanks.
