Our 5yr old traditional has just started jumping and seems to really enjoy it the problem is when the atmosphere is slightly more 'charged' he likes to either run out at the last second or completely tanks off after landing, fine in lesson or quieter atmosphere, although still strong, instructor has advised changing his bit for jumping, but i am worried about making him hard mouthed, he is currently ridden in an eggbutt snaffle, i was thinking about trying him in a fulmer snaffle with a copper lozenge first to give him more'feeling'to the bit? to gain more control? any ideas advice welcome :(

What will make him hard mouthed is hauling on the bit - any bit. So if a stronger bit gives you more control it will result in less or no hauling.

Has your instructor made any particular recommendations?

As already said...a stronger bit won't make a hose hard in the mouth, how it is used will. I use a cheltenham gag pretty much for this reason..ican get control in varieties of snaffles but results in a lot of heaving, hauling and energy (not to be lazy) resulting in a fed up me and a ticked off pony. with the cg i can have a really relaxed and soft contact which she still respects and when i need it i rarely have to ask twice for her to steady/relax/listen etc. which=relaxed rider+happy pony+ soft mouth :)
