hi wonder if anyone could help, its my daughters jumping pony we are hoping to affiliate soon but having some issues whilst jumping. This pony is 12 so really knows its job and always thinks its right, it absolutely likes jumping and that is where we need help, she gets keen not leaping in the air keen but wanting to go too fast at the fences and obviously as she gets higher and more technical courses this is not a good idea. We do lots of slowing down exercises at home which work a treat but once at a show she just loves it so much. She has had all the usual checks down for teeth, back and saddle and wondering about bits, we do swap and change her bits about for different disciplines but we have found the waterford gag to be quite useful, just wondered if anybody had any suggestions with any exercises or bitting ideas. Thankies for getting this far.

A exercise we use a lot which is good if they are taking off after a fence is to put a single pole up at a comfortable high, we do about 2ft6 for a horse. Then put a placing pole either side of the jump. They have to really think about their feet and can't launch themselves over it because of the pole behind it. It really does slow them down, Specially if you leave them to it to work out for them selves.

i found an old english gag to help because when you relax the reins it becomes a normal snaffle in the mouth and only moves as much as you pull. this worked on mine as he was calm between the jumps just ran towards them. string cheeks move faster allowing the bit to slide better and to return to normal quickly.
