Have just bought a lovely and well-mannered 9 year old 16.3 IDx gelding. His previous owner jumped him, up to 1.20m, and I'll be using him as an all-rounder, dressage, sj, xc etc.
I'm currently schooling him on the flat in a plain snaffle and drop noseband and it seems to be working ok. However, to jump, previous owner had him in a pelham, with connectors and a leather-covered curb chain, martingale and a grakle noseband. My instructor and I are not convinced that this is the right combination for him as it seems to make him hang a bit in the hand and I don't think the connectors are 'engaging' the curb action when you close your hand on the rein. He can be a strong boy when his blood's up and I don't want to chance it in the snaffle because I don't know if he'll respect it enough once he really gets going.
Any brilliant ideas for a bit that is going to check him when needed, but is not too severe - I don't want to impede his forward momentum?? Not too much poll pressure too?
Someone suggested a wilkie, but I've heard they are hard to come by?
